Dude, not to be rude, but if you don't know that protools doesn't use VSTs, then I feel it's a sign that you need to do more research before spending a money on a sequencer, especially as pro tools works out rather expensive for even a basic setup.
If you're running a macbook, then go for logic pro. Ableton is fine too and so is cubase but having used all of them I'm most happy with Logic Pro - it comes with great synths and fx, and 8 is the best version of it yet - it just works so well.
Now, granted it does have a steeper learning curve that fruity loops, and maybe a tiny bit more than cubase (but that's highly debatable) but once you get in to it nothing else compares IMHO.
You can also pick up logic express for $199 or studio (all bells and whistles) for $499 - real bargains for what you get.
