Hey everyone,

So I hardly post outside of the Westcoast Forum, and thought I would ask a few questions here....

I'm moving outta Protools, and into Logic Studio 8.

For you pros out there, (or anyone) what I can I look forward to in logic?

I'm loving the Ultrabeat feature in it, and have already started constructing my own beatgrids from it from past material.

I want more samples too.

What do you guys recommend for Trance, Prog, etc? I know there is alot out there, but maybe some opinions on something...

Any help anyone gives, thanks in advance.

I might be joining your camp at the end of the month, so I am interested in some responses also.

I'm still debating, either NI Maschine or a Macmini and Logic, I will be purchasing soon.

Expect a hard learning curve, but not as hard as it used to be back in 2002. Logic 8 has become extremely simple.

If you're after dance music sounds in general, you've got more than enough to start with running logic's own instruments in EXS24. You have some drum machines in there, and you can easily import exs patches into ultrabeat. I'd try layering some elements and isolate their respective frequencies. Then I'd bounce the result. For example a kick for the lows (synthesized) and one for the treble frequencies (sample). Same with hats, snares, claps.

Once you know how synthesized drums work in Ultrabeat, making sounds in other synths such as es2 shouldn't be a secret to you.

Ya I been taking some tutorials both online from a friend. Im finding Youtube being way helpful with the learning curve.

I found out also, that there is SO much stuff included in Logic, including all the content discs I got with it I still need to learn.

Spoke to Sean Tyas about it too, Since he produces with Logic, I asked him for some pointers and he says, "read all 3 manuals that came with it"

Whats EXS24? Sorry Im still such a noob to logic... I am however learning quickly. There is just so much stuff to cover!

I started constructing my own loops and beat grids last night in ultrabeat. Gonna see what I can do with my older stuff from tools and if I can bring it over.

On a side note, someone at the club came in last saturday Lucidity, and was attempting to use Maschine.

I love native and have been with them forever, but i think ill pass on Maschine till all the bugs are out. Looks like a awesome tool for sure tho.

Ive noticed also there are some courses that you can take for logic that apple offers. Are those a waste of time? Has anyone really been to one, and whats the costs?

I give lessons myself, but due to the time difference and your location, I think that won't be possible to organize, although I'm cheap compared to many. I'm doing this so I can apply for the level 3 diploma, it costs 4200$. I think that I've got at least level 3, as I've been using Logic since 1999.

EXS24 is Logic's Sampler. You should know it if you had opened the Instruments and Effects manual. :-)

Hehe I havent opened everything yet...

Yesterday I started tinkering with the Ultrabeat feature. But I think thats as far as I got. Then started messing with the features on it which were pretty sick.

Question on the midi part of it tho, I tried hooking up my midi keyboard to it and didnt get it to work right.

Can someone lend a hand or a quick setup on getting it hooked up? Going through oxygen keyboard or keystation 48 to logic via usb.

Off topic a little but Lolo, what is a level 3 diploma? Is this something specific to Logic or a general type of thing you can gain in any subject? Like how many levels are there and is there something like a level 3 diploma for Cubase? Is this something like a certification that proves you know a given subject so you are qualified to teach it? Just curious thanks man!

Logic level 3 is in fact level 301, and it's an official certification diploma delivered by apple once you pass the exam at an official apple school. It's required when you want to give masterclasses at an apple solution expert or when you want to organize that, or conferences. Same goes for every single big app from apple, such as Mac OS X, Final Cut Studio... and same goes for Adobe and Avid/digidesign Applications. Of course you can do without them but then you'll miss a huge class of customers, those being enterprises, pro's, SAE schools etc...

I don't know about cubase though. I guess there are official experts, you gotta check out steinberg.net to see if there are.

Thanks Lolo thats interesting and good to know. Since we are on the topic of Logic and I see the mention of ESX24 and Ultrabeat, to help me relate to what they are, would you know of something comparable? Is Ultrabeat similar to say Battery and ESX24 similar to Kontakt? The thought of moving to a Mac someday and trying out Logic is always there in the back of my mind because I wonder what I might be missing out on.

Ultrabeat is totally comparable to Battery, although I'd say that it shares most of its features with RMIV. It only misses a few things, such as the ability to take a loop and slice it.

EXS24 is more comparable to Halion from Steinberg. You can add zones/groups and all that stuff. But again you can't "slice" automatically. It imports REX and AKAI, and is a lot simpler to use than Kontakt is.

Speaking of Kontakt, I made a test 2 days ago with the demo, and to say the least, I was far from impressed in terms of GUI (the version that I downloaded from NI has graphical glitches) and intuitivity.

For those who look for a free add-on that does it all and that has a very nice interface... my choice goes to UVI Workstation. With that and logic you can do whatever you want the way you do it in Ableton Live.

Then, there are those who are going to ask about clip envelopes such as in Live... Well you can do exactly the same into Logic, only it's a little bit tricky when you don't know how to.

And for audio file manipulation, I think Logic still holds the crown in terms of flexibility. Again, you have to know specific things, and forget about apple loops edition and everything else they mention.

That's because of this experience and knowledge that I make people pay for their lessons, although soon I'll be giving a few tips away every now and then. You'll just have to be patient though! It took me until a few days ago to know Logic the way I know it. Videos such as sflogicninja's on youtube take a lot of time to produce. I'll be using the same software by the way, it's called screenflow, combined with Aquafadas Pulpmotion, Apple's Keynote, and many others so it looks more professional. The only thing I need to look after is my English. Then I'll eventually make hours of video, once the next Airwave album is finished.
