I was recently scolded for posting a link to a classic trance set over on trance.nu. The scolder said that t.nu doesn't allow any illegal activity like the sharing of MP3s, posting of DJ sets, and so on. It's pretty obvious to me that the hosting of live sets is generally illegal, since in most cases you're sharing a collection of copyrighted material without getting permission from any of the copyright owners. But that got me thinking about the more general question of DJing.
Is DJing itself usually illegal? I say "usually" because as far as I know most DJs are fairly small-time and therefore feel no need to sign up with any organizations or get broadcasting rights for the songs they play from any legal bodies or copyright owners. So they're technically "broadcasting" copyrighted material without getting any permission, and in some cases profiting from doing so when they play clubs or events -- which is illegal in most countries, right?
I'm not particularly worried about this stuff, I'm just kind of curious about the legal status of it all.

clubs pay licensing fees, as do radio stations.
promo sets are a grey area, but most of the producers/labels are happier to get the free promo and won't say anything. This music is not exactly a huge money maker, so any publicity is good publicity.

I think the real question is this:
What the hell were you doing at t.nu in the first place?
This.
Also, if not for DJs, most EDM producers would be out of 'jobs'.
Hehehe, 'jobs'.

well, if you look on your CDs, it shows a warning saying that any public performance is prohibited, so yeah, I guess it is illegal technically

Trance.nu is just retarded. If your not making any profit from it and you've modified it to make it your own, ie a mix, then it's not illegal. Plus no one except trance.nu cares about posting up mixes lol.

Beatport and other digital music retailers like Junodownload, Audiojelly, and DJ Download are marketing and selling the tracks contained in their sites as "music for DJs". The whole purpose of those tracks is to be played out in public.
