We've received word that sound engineer Tom Pfaeffle of the Tank Studio in Black Diamond has died of gunshot wounds received in an encounter at a Twisp area motel last night. The Methow Valley News has a bare-bones report of the incident here. Pfaeffle—a much-loved figure in the local music scene who also taught live audio production at the Art Institute of Seattle—worked with Nirvana, the Black Crowes, B.B. King, Alice Cooper, and many others. Pfaeffle also lent his audio expertise to young local groups like Wild Orchid Children and Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, the last of whom he was supposed to join today for their in-studio performance at KEXP. We'll update as we gather more information. Condolences to Mr. Pfaeffle's family and friends.

The incident occurred at 10:42 p.m. The victim, from Black Diamond, Wash., was taken to Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak, where he died from his wounds two hours later, according to an early-morning report from Twisp police officer Ty Sheehan. The suspect, a 57-year-old man from the Seattle area, was booked for Murder in the Second Degree and Reckless Endangerment. Police have not released the names of the victim or suspect at this time. The name of the motel was not released. The Seattle Times reported Saturday that the victim was Tom Pfaeffle, a respected sound engineer from Black Diamond who worked with music groups that included Nirvana, The Black Crowes and Heart. He was also an instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle, teaching audio production, according to the Times, and he owned and operated The Tank, a recording studio located in the woods of Black Diamond. Police are investigating the circumstances and motives for the shooting, and no further information was available by Saturday morning. –JH
