There are stories out there about slightly dodgier kits, the parts used, workmanship etc.

First off, telling me to "do my research" in response to what I said, doesn't make any sense.
Next, I have done my research, and seen the work of a few very good builders first hand, some of whom were using even higher quality parts than those in the ladyada kits. Yes, there are stories out there, and of course there are some shadier builders out there looking to make more profit by selling a "good enough" x0xb0x instead of a properly built, reliable one.
...and finally, you should do a bit of your own research. Forums such as the x0xb0x forum, related to specific pieces of DIY gear, tend to have a general dislike of people making money building the gear in question, putting together their own kits for sale (e.g. lost business for the original seller), etc. This sometimes results in stories that are actually "stories" being told about some builders. If you want to see more proof of this, look into the MIDIBox projects - particularly the MIDIBox SID.
