So for NYE 2000, I saw Phish play from midnight to sunrise and at the end I KNEW that I had just had the best night of my life. For the last 2 years I remembered that night with a little depression because I knew I would never be able to top the feeling of contentment I had that night.

And then this weekend I attended the best party that I have ever been to and that feeling returned. And now I am trying to look back and remember how I felt at NYE 2000 because I never thought I could feel that way again. The best part is, this weekend I was sober (the other event I had 3 pills, and I hallucinated) and the feeling of ecstasy was stronger and longer lasting than I have ever felt before.

This event has left me in a state of shock and happiness. But at the same time, I am sad, because I know the music I used to listen to can no longer do what it used to for me. For those of you who don’t know, Phish is a jamband with a Grateful Dead – like following. The similarity in the scenes got me hooked on clubs but now Phish’s music which used to be EVERYTHING to me can not even touch the places that Trance takes me to.

So my question is, is Trance really THAT superior? Why can’t I appreciate 2 different types of music at the same time? I love it when music takes me away but I don’t understand how a whole genre of music can lose its ability to do that for me.

I guess this is OK because the music I listen to now has made me happy and that is all that really matter...

I had a friend who toured with Phish for 3 years, and she feels the exact same way. I also feel this way about some of the old stuff that used to appeal to me. A few months ago me the Mrs. went to a U2 concert here in KC, and while it was a good show, we didn't leave with that certain "euphoric" feeling (no, I don't mean drug-induced). But a couple of weeks ago we went to an afterhours party for $10 bucks and witnessed a killer house set from Astroglyde (NY residents at Groovejet). A few months back, we saw an incredible set from Sasha and Digweed. So far, no other music genre has come close to electronica, especially live shows.

However, I still like to listen to other music. I feel a lot more balanced when I do, for some reason. I'll balance out the dance beats with some John Coltraine or Miles Davis on occasion. Or I'll throw in my old college tunes of Everclear, 311, Samples, etc. And then there's those nostalgic occasions of high school music that I must throw in, like the Cure, Smiths, Pixies, Depeche Mode, Love and Rockets, Christ I need to stop! I am really feeling old now!

*throws PVD CD in computer and scrambles for the headphones.....*

1. no genre is superior
2. you CAN appreciate 2 different genres at the same time. the more the merrier.

i love that feeling too, =P.
maybe you're just looking for more from music that trance isn't giving you.

i think you misunderstood. trance gives me feelings that i cannot seem to get with other types of music. but i remember getting those feelings at phish shows in the past. did i really feel that strongly about phish then? it's weird that i can't get into other tyoes of music the way i used to ever since i started listening to trance a lot.

the only exception is dark classical music.

the only other kind of genre that makes me feel the way trance makes me feel is a live female voice.. be it pop, r&b, or opera. same tingles.

only trance is music. the rest is just noise. i'm glad u've found trance

Yea, so I'm a little older than most of you, big deal.
I actually think I have a better, overall perspective when it comes to 'electronica' because I was there before it even became a 'gendre'.
I used to listen to all the alternative 80's new wave stuff, but I had no idea at the time that it was would spawn into what we now know as Trance.
I love going out to listen to a great live set. It's such a natural, euphoric high for me. I know it's awesome when I get a grin on my face while I'm dancin' on the floor.
I can't help myself but think, "This is incredibly awesome!"
I listen to many, many different types of music but nothing does it like Trance does.

yeah, my thoughts too.
i could care less about other genres, but if i hear a female voice especially r&b it's like, stop everything and tune in. artist? title? damn, no ag!! lol. over the weekend there was a 60 min segment on counter-tenors. i'm not gay alright!! but this dude's voice had me mesmerized.

don't take this the wrong way butterfly, but maybe it's because you're blossoming. you are expanding new areas of your consciousness?? i didn't like trance the first time i heard it. 6 months later for some reason, borrowed a cd from a friend and got hooked. you can listen to the same song and have a totally different emotion to it the second time. wait. now i'm confused. aaarrrghghghg.

i think what i'm trying to say is that since music is a form of expression, it doesn't help you express your feelings, but it helps you reach a lot of those emotions that were hidden , unaware to you, or even bottled up maybe. other types of music were just loud, angst-ridden good for rebelling and yelling back at the world, or no nonsense popish fluff, or something psychedelic. with trance, and without words to get in the way, you can experience it on a deeper level.

it does help, thanks. evrything that ppl have written is making sense. but part of my problem is that these other types of music used to evoke equally stong feelings and now that i listen to trance, they don't anymore. i feel like trance might have taken something away that i used to cherish.

hey i used to listen to alot of hard rock and stuff and i always thought that gave me a good feeling until the day i heard..Sasha and John Digweed- northern exposure:expeditions (disc 1)

My feelings of all the stuff I used to listen to ran off and I couldn't believe there was something out there that could promote this awesome feeling that I'd never felt before in other types of music. So since then I've been completly sold out and the other genres of rock/jazz/pop I used to listen to completly faded out and now I just see them as a completly boring genre of music to listen to.

Nowadays people here in the south (macon, georgia) haven't actually heard any of this stuff so when i say trance they think of Darude-Sandstorm and all that crap.

Oh golly....it's been a crazy relationship I've had with trance but now i love it more than anything.
