not going to happen. A huge reason is that China isn't ceding any power.

Only way that'll happen is if all those countries had the same form of government. The only way the EU could have formed is if all its members were democracies.

Way too many wedge issues - they're already detrimental to ASEAN. No way integration happens with Burma, Taiwan, and Aceh unresolved.

Define together, and you might have a deal. If you're talking political or economic partnership, that happened years ago. If you're talking integration, a single currency, a common foreign policy, or the dissolution of political borders, you're dreaming.

I'm pretty sure there's far more people in Australian soil working on that goal

Im sorry William, but once again you show a sincere case of not knowing what you’re talking about. The measures and rhetoric from the Australian government regards closer economic ties and cooperation in the region (which has been the labor party’s platform since paul keating). Nobody is talking about an EU bloc with common laws, currencies and the easing of borders.

If you think its likely that liberal democracies are going to get into a Union bed with countries like Myanmar, you are seriously mistaken. If you think that the substantial tensions and instability in the SE asian region are going to abate enough to make a Union at all likely, again you are mistaken. If you think that the extremist brand of islam that has a (legislative) foothold in many asian countries could tolerate the levels of progressive reform necessary for an EU-style parliament or union with western neighbours, you are bordering on delusion.

Lets see:
China: Too imperialist
Australia: Too imperialist
Japan: Too different to other countries
India: Too different to other countries
New Zealand: No one cares about
Apart from maybe Japan, South Korea and Taiwan strengthening economic ties I just don't see much happening.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I mean I'll probably get accused of this too, but compared to that statement

I'm going on the 'no' front.

Japan, South Korea, and China are all far to nationalist to co-operate. India and Australia/NZ are far to different from the other countries to really get along. Indonesia is a world of it's own.

Thailand, Vietnam, Mylasia, Laos, Bangledesh - these countries share some amount of similarity and are small enough that working together is a viable option but I think they will all end up siding with one of the bigger powerhouses through a mix of bilateral trade agreements.

Myanmar / Burma is just plain on it's own. Even the Chinese give the country a wide bearth because it's a political nightmare. I think, maybe, that all governments see the horrible state of the nation but that there really isn't much that can be done right now. It's a project for another decade.

The closest to agreements that are comming out of this region are reduced tarriffs and agreements on currency reserves. By 2015 it will be an accomplishment if the region is still peaceful.
