In the past I've been able to plug a 3.5mm headphone jack into my computer with RCA connectors on the other end. The red, white and yellow plugs then go into the TV so I can use it as an external screen.
At the moment, all I have is a cable which is missing yellow. I thought I'd just watch movies in mono rather than stereo. However, despite being set to 'AV', the TV thinks it's getting no signal. When I plug the red and white in to the appropriate ports, I'd expect to get sound, but I still get nothing. The laptop's sound is up to full and when I pull the headphone jack out I get blasted.
Any ideas why this wouldn't be working? I'm using a Asus netbook with Windows 7. Could it be something to do with the chipset etc? I don't see why if I can use headphones perfectly, the sound can't be routed to the TV via the same method.
The only thing I've thought of is that the cable is broken. I bought it from some woman on the side of the road for less than a buck, so there's a chance, but it looks to be in pretty good condition.

just wondering ...
do you have this?
also i have ran into this problem this weekend with my win7 laptop. it's odd. I connected my HDMI and audio cables to the tv. video works, but the sound doesn't work. so i had to connect my audio cables to my receiver, and the sound works fine now. it might be my tv, since it's a bit old, however the video looks pretty good on my tv with HDMI. /shrug

Yes, that's the cable I have.
When you say receiver, do you mean your digital TV receiver?

ur tv is probably expecting a video signal too (the yellow), meanwhile it blocks everything i guess. connect that from your dvd player, camera or some shit. or maybe the PC? VGA -> yellow shit plug exists i think.
I tried taking one of the red/white cables out earlier and connecting it into the yellow hole, and it made no difference.

what outputs to you have on your laptop for video? (svideo/vga/hdmi?)
Didn't I specifically mention that I'd be happy to listen in mono? And that I'm using a netbook? If I had the capacity to use HDMI or another superior form of transmission, I would. I don't, so I'm going with RCA.

That's incorrect. An RCA cable is an RCA cable. They're just color coded to aid you when you're setting something up.
