Mixed feelings about this, like the previous single Unite. The Fix and Can't Stop are rocking acid house that you know would be great fun to dance to, and Phoenix 97 sounds like an absolutely screaming prog trancer when it's not in the breakdown. The breakdown illustrates the problem here, though. Lee Softley just can't write great hooks, not like the BA hooks of old, and there's little in the way of epic chord progressions either. Without it you're left with a huge amount of riffage. These tracks are all basslines and riffs, which is good fun, but when Softley goes for a melody, like he does in Phoenix 97, it's just half-hearted keyboard stabbing. That track sounds seriously monstrous, but I wouldn't want to hear several minutes of the stupid riff in the middle. And Ecuador is just a bit rubbish.
I'll probably pick some of these up, but I'm not sure how I'd play them in a set. Not really playing banging prog at the moment.
