well..heres my situation. Im supposed to be going to school in the fall. But then I figured out I was enrolled in the wrong program, so right now it seems school is out of the question. That means my cross N. america trip is getting back on the go.
Im leaving from here(calgary) going thru Arizona(grandparents) and then off to FLORIDA for Ultra 5. So to some of you, ill be looking forward to the meetup (JayD, Foxie, Sly etc) and to others, im sure ill meet you, but I dont know you yet.
So really Ultra is my only stop where I have a date when I wanna be somwhere. Since maybe one of you knows better than I..Ultra is March 22 right?
Well since Im driving by myself, when do you think I should be leaving Arizona to make it there in time. I would want to be in Miami on the 21st to get rested..really I should just get a massive map, and take a look. but who knows what that might tell me.
Im thinking it should be a 4-5 day solo trip from Az if I make no stops in between(which I will not be doing) so probably a 9-12 day trip.
Also if you have ANY advice in planing road trips, give me advice. This is my first, and I dont want any massive disasters. Im being frugal and camping/sleeping in car/Hostels as much as I can.
so..SEE YOU IN MARCH!!! |
damn dude! thats one massive trip! and all by yourself?? i've gone backpacking through europe, but i've never gone on a roadtrip, so i dunno what to tell you.
i don't think the official date for ultra is known yet, but once it is, it will be up right here. there is an ultra in sept in ny if you can make it to that. starfox and i might be flying up to go and catch that. well he'll probably be going regardless, but i might have more troubles with that, we'll see
in any case, i wish you much luck, and more importantly a kickass time on this road trip. btw, sorry to head about school, major shit

travel tips
Thats a long way to travel. You will get to see lots of cool stuff on the way though. Try priceline.com for cheap hotels. They let you bid the price so you can usually stay at hotels for 1/2 price. Also bring plenty of cds. You may want to check airline prices from az - fl. It may be cheaper that driving?

I've driven x-country 3 times , twice by myself. things I noticed, state parks are the cheapest to camp at 12-15 bucks a night , a cheap hotel will run you about 25$ national parks run about 30-40. haven't done the hostel route since '94 so don't have any opinions on that. bring some phone cards cell phones don't always work where you want them too. more than 10hours a day driving alone is alot, remember you're doing it for days on end not just one one trip i logged 9000miles in 30days thats with stayin in one place for 5 days shit adds up. careful of rest stops there are freaks galore there at 3am no matter where you are.
