Intrigued and need an answer.

So I got these directly from Webster's dictionary. It fascinates me as dumbstep has surged in popularity for some odd reason. I'm sure there are some good ones out there and this flush of wannabes have ruined the genre but I just need this answered.

Definition of Music

a : the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity.

b : vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony.

Definition of Noise

a : sound; especially : one that lacks agreeable musical quality or is noticeably unpleasant.

b : any sound that is undesired or interferes with one's hearing of something.

So by definition, dumbstep is Noise. It has no rhythm, melody, or harmany and lacks agreeable musical quality. The one exception I have heard is Flux Pavillion who can actually produce all three qualities of music.

So Skrillex, Rusko, PANTyRAiD, etc... is just Noise. It literally is either absolute random obnoxious bass and/or synth drops for no reason and follows no pattern of rhythm, melody, or harmony. Skrillex is by far the worst and people eat that sh*t up like a fat kid eats cake. I have FL Studio and some power tools, so should I make some dumbstep? I asked for advice on some decent trance, electro, house and people just lamed out. I literally live in east gish and I might have 9 radio stations: 3 country, 3 rock'n'roll, 1 oldes, 1 new age, 1 alternative, and 1 pop music. I don't get to hear quality trance on the radio so I ask for some suggestions and get nothing. I survived off blog sites, but now it is all dumbstep and is completely intolerable.

I even looked at the top 250 and wow that is way off. Popularity I presume because Daft Punk could musically rape DeadMau5 who is terrible and they're costumes are better and they came up with that sh*t before him. How is Afrojack even on that list? Wow, can someone please enlighten me with some MUSIC that has those three qualities and isn't dumbstep please. Sorry to be offensive to those who like older dubstep as these new dumbstep individuals have raped the genre and hopped on the bandwagon.

dumb post.

also,

music and noise aren't exactly exclusive, and definitions and perceptions music are based on shifting cultural value systems. Noise is more of the interruption of music, but culturally we have incorporate 'noise' into our perception of music as a whole.

please educate yourself and stop reading the dictionary

you ever heard of noise music? paradoxical, no?

check out: http://www.discogs.com/Grasshopper-...release/2746011

one of my favorite releases in that genre. it's a big scene too, with international festivals and the like (obviously not nearly as big as edm). you from new york? the seedier parts of town are guaranteed to a have a scene dedicated to this stuff.

anyway, this question of your is based on a dictionary definition. think about this: why is it that the inclusion of noises (clocks, cars, etc) is suddenly musical when they are sampled and put to use?

what about jazz and improvisational music? why is that stuff musical when you have no set plan or direction and the musicians do is play off each other for half hour or so?

dunno if you know anything about the history of music in the west, but in the middle ages, until around 1200, plainchant (the dominant and official genre of the Church) allowed only 2 notes. anything else was the devil's work.

and why not listen to noise anyway? open your window and you'll hear passing cars, people, sirens, etc all merged into a droning texture. there's a genre called "field recordings". check it (a release i particularly like): http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Watson...release/1370843

anyway, in order to give some positive definition for you, you can think of music as a certain set of relations. if you check out what is considered musical around the world you'll flip out a few hundred times, and then relax.

attempting to define a certain limit to what is musical and, by doing so, attempting to exclude an entire domain of musicality does not accomplish much. whole groups of people won't disappear because you wave a piece of paper at them. dubstep will still be produced. it's much more interesting to think about what you want your music to do -- and why that dubstep sound doesn't do it.

here's a dubstep track:

Many drum sounds are pretty much "noise" anyway, in terms of frequencies. And we all love us some drums, right?

a kick on the 1st and 3rd beat and snare on the 2nd and 4th is considered a rythm.

Interesting

Wow, CasuallyIgnorant, must have taken you a day to think of that one, good. I wasn't ripping on dubstep just this "NEW WAVE BANDWAGON" I simply call dumbstep because it is atrocious. That song you posted is phenomenal and is the opposite of noise. It has a nice beat and rhythm. I shall assume that is actually dubstep since it is nice. Reminds me of the "The Sunshine Underground." Punch some fungus into my face and stare at that screen. This post wasn't intended to dis dubstep as I KNOW there are amazing bands spread out through a wide variety of genres. I just simply am appalled at the new sh*t that is popping up in America that is trash. I have been to other countries before and heard the best radio stations/shows ever. Now that I'm home I have 10 stations and I need some new tunes. I was on a gold mine until these last few months then the new wave of "dumbstep" rolled in and took over. That is all. As posted that dubstep song was awesome. Feed me some more of that and some good trance, house, tribal, progressive, electro, etc.. My apologies if you like the new bandwagon dubstep but I knew there was some good ones out there.
