Oh and by the way, I realize that sub basses go down to 30Hz hence why I mentioned a shelf, so the cut off below 45Hz was really because I couldn't hear any changes below that anyway.

Well as said earlier, I have provided an mp3 below of how I'd normally mix/eq my kick and sub bass.
Just a word about what I've done. Firstly, the MP3 is hosted on megaupload (first file sharing servie that come up: let me know if it's a problem).
In this example, for the kick using just a various setting on one of my favorite EQ's, plus some compression. On the sub bass, I've
set a high pass to cut at 45Hz with a Q of 1:20, and a peak boost at around 85Hz by 2.14db. A lowpass cuts all down to 555Hz. Kick is referenced at 0db, sub bass mixed in at -8db.

It's a mega basic example...but fundamentally feel free to rip this apart. If there's anything I can do to improve it, please let me know.
