i dont know what would work the best for a party but i found a set that fits what your need sorta

cambridge soundworks tower III's
florrstanding speakers with a tweeter and a 8inch driver
handles up to 200w each
from experience with cambridge soundworks i can tell you that they sound AWESOME and those 8in drivers should hit pretty hard( i have a CS basscube 8 in my basement, shakes the house )...and if you put 200w to each of them they are going to be ungodly loud
and they look nice to boot

I would, like your friend, recommend Cerwin Vega speakers. I would choose either the E710's, E712's or the E715's if you want to kick it!

In my opinion, you are best off going with the E712s. They are the best cost for the kick, and for the (small) room that you want to fill, these 300W 12" woofers will do just fine! Especially if you don't want to wake the neighbors Just remember with lots of people in the room, you may also want to mount 4 book shelf speakers near the ceiling. That way you can have better monitors for the djs and the sound won't be muffled because it's coming from the floor! This way you will also not run the risk of people spilling drinks on your new babies either!

I would highly suggest the E706's for another reason too. You'll need to buy an amp to actually use the E712s or 15's with 300W or 400W. Anyway, tell me what you think, I had lived in a party house the last year of school and that is the setup that we had. We also had 10' ceilings too, so it worked out well. It also deviates the sound from spreading to the other rooms so that it isn't so loud in the next room from the bass that you can't talk.

I have been looking for a pair of floorstanding speakers for over a year (I am veeeeery) fussy and got all the help I needed from the ppl on that website. They are veeeery knowledgable and helpful. You will get what you need from there.

as of now i'm thinking about the cerwin vega e715's. I'm still reading up on Bjet's links and threads. I also considered doing what gluegun said in one of his posts, which is to make my own speakers. seems really complicated but i'm an electrical engineering major so it should be fun . i still have to look at the missions and cambridge, thanks for the info. seems like a lot to research. i'm probably looking for 400w or so per channel. i also need bookshelf speakers for monitors, what do you guys suggest?

(also i might be stupid as to what i'm planning, i just want to check if it makes sense to have bookshelf as monitor and these big powerful speakers facing the dance area. would it be better to have bookshelf speakers from the ceiling? -got the idea from flesch)

ok let's spell things out here just for a minute ..... this is ALL there is you need to know when buying speakers (IMHO of course hehe!)

go to lots of stores and ask LOTS AND LOTS of questions. the only store/s you WANT to go back to are those that will answer your questions even though you are not going to fork out thousands of dollars there and then.

THEN, once you have found a few stores that have great customer service you should, just like in the phone directory with your fingers, let your ears to the work. Whatever setup sounds good to your ears then that's about all there is to it. Leave the store with a warm feeling about speaker X and then go back a week or so later with your own choonz and have another listen.

Make sure that they don't hook the speakers up with really expensive cables and receivers that are sooooo different to what you will be using yourself.

Having said all that riff-raff, the bottom line is this:

- AT THE END OF THE DAY YOUR OWN EARS WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS BEST


And that is all you really need to know about buying speakers, other than don't buy the first set you see/hear and take your time. Your speakers are probably the single most important investment you will make and last you the longest. Take your time with making a decision !!

Hmmm, i would try to figure out what 'camp' of audio you would look in first. Audiophile speakers are made for sound quality, and often sacrafice durability/scratch resistance/poke resistance/etc. etc. etc. to obtain this. For example, you *don't* see audiophile speakers with metal grilles covering the drivers; the same goes for home theater speakers.. however, that does NOT mean that these sorts of speakers won't get loud or have extreme amounts of bass.

I just looked at those CV speakers... and it doesn't LOOK like they have the obscene build qualtiy sometimes found in PA speakers; those just seem to be a basic, consumer-level speakers. If you are in the market for that sort of thing, i would *VERY* strongly suggest you ask at avsforum! There is no reason to sacrafice sound quality when you can get audiophile speakers that get just as loud, cost just as much, and get just as much bass..

So, FROM WHAT I KNOW (and I am getting well out of my specialty here) the markets go...

Consumer = decent sound quality, will definitely have loads of bass, but there's usually a VERY big chance you could've gotten better quality for less money..

PA = extreme resistance to taking a pounding (getting poked, get beer spilled on 'em

Audiophile/Home theater = best place for sound quality, bass quantity will be a worry, (ie, you can't ASSUME it'll have enough bass by simply buying an audiophile speaker; you have to look at the exact setup), you have to worry about durability, but you might be able to get the best deals here...

Also, you *can* get a number of self-powered home theater oriented subs and simply split the signal... lots of home theaters use dual subwoofers, and they are *MADE* to fill an entire room (yes, even one that big) with bass..

Also, you should probably consider the amplification and the speakers together -- different speakers have different amounts of efficiency, and take different amounts of power to run well.

So, in short, go ask people who have more experience with setting up rooms of about that size for sound systems -- this means the home theater and audiophile crowds at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ and http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/, and even the professional and audiophile crowds at http://www.audioasylum.com/
