Tiesto implies: Trance is for druggies, it's "not mature," and not evolution?

http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoast...view.php?page=1

quote:
I don't think I really play rave music anymore. Dance music in general has evolved to a mature sound. To call it rave music is so '90s. It's a mature sound like rock and jazz and hip-hop. And we draw a different crowd nowadays than just drug-releated people. That's the most annoying thing -- that it's all about drugs. It's so much more than that.

He claims that dance music has evolved. He claims that he doesn't play "rave music anymore." What is rave music? If he considers calling 90s dance music as "rave music," then he must be implying that Trance is also 90s rave music. If he is implying that Trance is 90s rave music, then he is saying that Trance is only for druggies and it is an immature sound and whatnot.

I'm not sure if I'm taking this out of context, but that's how I really feel about what he's saying. Tijs is full of it. It doesn't matter if it is Trance, House, Techno, DubStep, DnB, or whatever else. Each genre and each form of music has a druggie crowd. There are still sobers and druggies at his new concerts. And it wasn't any different when he was spinning Trance as well.

All of this will make sense ten years from now when you become jaded.

Yes because no one was tripping balls on acid at Woodstock in 69, and no one smokes pot at the Rock the Bells hip hop festival in NYC every year.

The music he plays now caters to bros piss drunk on grey goose hulking out on blow, hypocrite.

Tiesto doesn't know what he's talking about. There is and always has been a large part of the scene that advocates against drugs.
I don't do any drugs; the music alone gets me energized.
He's just trying to make excuses as to why his music has been so terrible the past few years by saying it's "evolved" I think.

If you actually show the context of that quote...

quote:

What do you think of the controversy over raves in L.A. (they've pretty much been shut out of the L.A. Coliseum and Sports Arena after a 15-year-old died from an ecstasy overdose).

I think it's a little over the top how people reacted. I think if you organize everything well, people can die anywhere -- at pop and rock festivals. It's so much more than that.

...Then I really don't see what's so offensive about what he said. Especially considering he's trying to promote an event in the world's epicenter of drug paranoia.

DJ Pluviose, in the nicest possible sense... can you please shut the fuck up and stop polluting MD with your endless ramblings about trance and Tiesto and 1997, for fuck's sake?

He's just another trance guy from the dance illuminati who wants to get rid of trance's kiddie unicorn connotations. If you look at the guys in trance these days, they don't have crazy raver pants, a pacifier, and other rave regalia. They look like suave European guys.

Trance is a dirty word. Markus Schulz wants to kill unicorns. Lots of old prog guys put themselves in the tech house or techno camp now. The thing is, as much as I love Schulz and Tiesto, Ferry ,etc., they do play and make ravey stuff. Nothing wrong with that at all. I wonder why there is so much self-loathing in trance that even guys who are in it don't want to be associated with it.

That said, I am pretty sad that Tiesto had Americanized his sound. Today's post-rave sound in the states is heavily derivative of rock, pop, and hip-hop which is our holy trinity here. You can't reach a wide audience here playing magik tiesto or isos tiesto.

Umm, Tjis...mature does not automatically mean good. In fact, trying to make something more mature often ends up producing something that is the very opposite of good.
Here's a video that I consider to be quite relevant:

Even worse, I think that maturity in general kills curiosity, one of the most important cornerstones for creativity. Tjis, if you want your music to be taken seriously, keep that immaturity you used to have in your music, but please add some intelligence into it instead of tossing out the EDM equivalent of the fucking Youngblood comics!

No, it's not implied. You are reading into it so much that you are twisting the meaning.

...And in a worst-case scenario, the very opposite of mature, as well.

Why is anyone paying any attention to what this clown is saying in the first place? Why are you reading Tiesto interviews in 2011? Just ignore him, please. There's too much great music out there to be discovered to waste time deliberately getting angry about the bad stuff.
