Thanks, this guy is incredibly lucid and I pretty much agree with it all.

I wanted to pick out this part in particular;

Most people will not bother to regularly follow more than a few novelists, musicians or movie actors. There are simply not the psychological capacity, enough time and funds to compare thousands of contestants in order to figure out who should receive our limited attention.

...................

One reason I have not time for all the moaning about Tiesto, is encapsualted in the above statement. I've long argued that the moaning producers woeful in thier lack of attention need to consider thier own buying habits lets say when browsing films.

Just taking horror films alone, there are hundreds of films available each month, so of course most of us just tend to be able to buy a couple. We have not the time nor ability to fairly select out the 'best artists' whatever that might mean.

Music choice is vastly greater than film, so just accept most of us will never get much recognition. Just enjoy the ride or be damned sure to be the best and not derivative.

The article makes the surge of copycatting after a genre's rise to viability all the more futile; you're only helping out those at the top by making more derivative dub step.

You really have to have your own sound and identity to make a dent in the music scene.

Yeh good point nevermind me even posting that this thread started on a potentially good topic and I'm already distracting it. Gonna delete it I'll just deal with it tommorow and see what happens.

The problem with being radically different is that it's practically impossible to get signed or noticed/promoted unless you know people.... pretty much every new artist is just a different take on what existed before.

I don't think there are these "revolutions" in music that people seem to think there are. Music just gradually evolves over time.

The second part of the article answers these concerns.

It boils down to trying to sell a label a product they do not want. Labels are there to dish out more of the same.

Exceptional read, both parts! Thanks for posting! This is the exact reason I constantly try staying couragous and following my own path... I just have never seen any reason "reprodusing" someone elses visions! In art I want to create something new. Thats a big part of what art is for me, originality. We should always try being innovative and create something new, for the more pleasure of both us and others. Thats in my opinion. What would the world be without couragous, original, foolish souls? We wouldn't have electricity, thats for sure, and we would definately not be able to fly! Humans building machines able to fly over the atlantic, think about it. That was unthinkable to all except a few absurdly nonsensical people, who built those machines. Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common, so we should celebrate it! Bring forth our individuality, not camouflage it through already trodden paths! Variety is the spice of life.

It's like what Steve Jobs said in his infamous speech! "Your time is limited, so don't spend it living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't be trapped by dogma. Have the courage to follow your own heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. Stay foolish, stay hungry."

“You've gotta be original, because if you're like someone else, what do they need you for?”
Bernadette Peters

quite the opposite, Being radically different and good is pretty much what guarantees success. Every big artist now save a few douche bags were different but good. Being like everyone else will get you absolutely nowhere. Most people that say otherwise where just different in a bad way. Therein lies the secret.

We definitely need more artists like Tiny Tim and less [insert your choice of pop star here] in the world.
