None of the above. I do it as a hobby knowing that it will always cost me far more than I will ever earn from it.
I do it because I've already had my 15 minutes of fame (well, nearly 20 years of moderate regional success), I've got a great career and family to support my expensive hobby, I love making music, and I love writing music with the many talented singers, musicians, and producers that I've worked with over the years. I'm totally cool with that. |
Yeah, but you wouldn't mind get a bit more to support this successful (but local) hobby?

That would depend on what other commitments and risks came with it. As you know, I was a professional musician for much of my life and, while it was great living that lifestyle at that time in my life, it's not something I wish to do again. I make music on my terms and my schedule now, and I pretty much lose interest whenever it starts to feel like work (e.g., contracts, deadlines, requests for edits). I deal with that sh*t at my job every day, and music is one of my escapes from that.
Then again, I'm also probably an extreme outlier. I'm guessing that most producers here are much younger and have some ambition to do something with their music. More power to 'em, but that's not me.

Nothing would be different then is right now, except your share of your sold stuff would be much bigger lol - talking about fairness lol
No contract, you do the way you want it - lets call it "scalable opportunities", you wont more you produce more!!!

Dunno if this will help or clutter up the process but FWIW...
I am a hobbyist and follow the Devin Townsend school of thought. IE: Make what 'you' want to hear and there's probably a few more nerds out there who like it too.
I am not interested in making any money. I just want to make things that someone hears and says "Man, that was freaking cool." And if no one ever hears it, that's OK too. I am personally satisfied with the creative process and my own end result.
That's it for me. Now if i can somehow profit, I'm all for that. But I do not want to deal with the promotion/networking bs, nor the business of music. I want to have a creative outlet aside from writing. That's all.
