Is Techno an acquired taste?

I've been sifting through Joris Voorn's discography and as much as he's respected in terms of reviews and adoration, it's not my cup of tea. Incident is good, though.

You are an acquired taste, Matt. But you'll have to do more than listen to Voorn's music before you could possibly say a thing like that; there are so many technoes. Have you checked out Vince Watson's discography, both recent and older?

I'm gonna post Vince Watson's most viewed track on youtube but it obviously has some house influence. If this is his signature track, then I guess I'm even more convinced now. It's not horrid but it's something the purists such as yourself will like.

Watson and Voorn are both quite melodic, almost Detroit-influenced tech house a lot of the time. If you don't like them, "pure" techno is probably not the genre for you.

Techno is soundsystem music, though. It makes a totally different kind of sense in a club. I always wonder how techno DJs can judge tracks based on hearing them in the headphones in a shop or at home.

I definitely wasn't referring to the type of techno carl cox played such as hard UK techno but something along the lines of detroit techno, dub techno or other techno derivatives mixed with another genre. I guess it's more justified on a proper soundsystem.

It might be worth your while to check older Alexander Kowalski/Kanzleramt, if you haven't already. Perhaps Funk D'Void; or even the music of Mirko van Dommelen, Berry van Gardingen under their variety of aliases; EC Records; maybe Steve Rachmad's Sterac?

To be fair, these are all good names but they're still in that melodic Detroit vein that Matt clearly can't get his head around.

Try harder to join the circle of hundreds and thousands of techno fans who consider melodic techno tracks to be the greatest thing since sliced bread? Comments for that Mystical Rhythm track literally called it an electronic masterpiece. There is clearly something there in techno in terms of the soundscape that others can grasp. No wonder this record by The Aztec Mystic is so highly lauded.

That would be a bit steep, but there's no harm in making an effort to try and develop a mature taste in music.

Try listening to some Deniro, some nice melodic, easily accessible techno imo:

If we're going to stick with Vince Watson, this is just about as trancey as Detroit techno gets. If you don't dig this Matt, just give up and go home:
