Friday 336: I'm now a certified hacker

How are you doing?

Tonight the weirdest thing happened. Someone phoned me (!) claiming I had hacked into his girlfriend's twitter account, and he wanted her handle back. I thought it was a con, because he started telling me about... my own account. Even offered to send me pictures via WhatsApp (which, for privacy reasons, I do not use). When I pointed out it couldn't be hers because I've had the same account since 2008, he was like "wait, what?", hung up, and then he sent me an SMS apologising because it was a mistake.

So far, so good... but it took him one hour from the first time he tried to retrieve my Twitter password to him reaching me. I don't know if this is the result of a widespread data breach from last year (my phone provider was targeted), or public records due to my work as a public servant but, given that I don't ever use my full name on-line, I'm very confused. Either way, I'm spending my night doing a thorough review of all my information online. Also, someone apparently now thinks I'm a hacker though, so yay for that

I hope your day has been more normal than mine

In 2021 everyone should be using a password manager (Bitwarden, Lastpass, 1password, etc.) and have a unique password (16+ in length) for each site.

This is probably why my account wasn't compromised. This, and the two-step verification thingy. Has it gone out of fashion though? I wonder if that's how he started looking for my phone number.

My wife thinks it's a WhatsApp con (very common around here), and the "photos" he wanted to send me were some kind of bait. The phone company data breach would have made it much easier for grifters, after all. If it's a genuine mistake, I'm impressed he managed to track me down but couldn't remember his girlfriend's actual Twitter handle

I'm all out of new passwords, I literally use the same one for every single website , with slight variations to it . There is just too many things out there that require a password and I'm not creative enough to think of a new one every single time , and then there is the case of remembering them all. One thing I think everyone should have is 2 step verification though.

So much less stressful after converting to Bitwarden. It's free and fills everything with a click. Everything has 20+ character password and I just need to remember my passphrase, Hunter2 to access it all.

What's the advantage of Bitwarden over other password managers?

I've been doing it oldschool, generating strong passwords and saving my notes as Linkin Park mp3 files just like those good old Limewire viruses.

The 2-step verification (and strong passwords) definitely saved me from having my account potentially hacked by this "white knight" saving an onyx-bright damsel in distress, I can't recommend it enough

Not that I check through it, but Bitwarden is open source, so it's not there to spy etc. It is always ranked high for security protection. You can self-host if you want. Or it was really easy to just setup an online account and it syncs your passwords across all devices. My wife and I share certain passwords and it's easy to store those in a shared spot.

But I've stuck with it since it is real easy to use in browser and phone. I imported all my browser stored passwords and just started running through all 300! You just edit the Bitwarden entry, generate a new password, save and use!

Also the free version has a lot of features. I would be happy to pay for it, but it gives me all I would want at the free level.

I am sorry, I have abandoned this former life of hacking and mischief. I am now registering heavenly real state as NFTs and selling them to born-again crypto bros.

Would you like an acre or two instead? There's some room right next to Saint Peter's triplex near the Pearly Gates.
