Removing Hiss From Samples?
View this Thread in Original format

i got some samples + acapellas on vinyl which i ripped and they sound ok, but when i stick them into something when i wanna produce, u can really hear that vinyl hiss noise, any ideas how to fix this, eqing just takes away the frequency, moreso than the hiss.

Try some denoising plug-ins ;)

I've tried using a few with varying degrees of success. If you've got a sample of the hiss only you might try the Sonic Foundry noise reduction stuff, or the Waves X-Noise plug. I've managed to get good results from the Waves plug without a hiss sample (or noise print) from an old tape recording.

ill have a look at them, i've managed to reduce some noise from a few of the samples but the hiss on this 1 kick is doin ma nut in!

In Cool Edit Pro, you can select a section of noise in the recording and have it eliminate that noise from the entire recording. Or you could try using dynamics processing to act as a noise gate, which will only let through sound that is above a certain threshold.

try noise gates, works fine every time...

Forget all that.

Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction 2.0a is the only plugin you need.

Can u get rid of Hum using this as well? I got a mix with a really bad bassy hum, I could eq it but then I lose a bit of the bass kicks, and it sounds a bit weak.

definitely use sonic foundry noise reduction... i have used it in many recordings where there was hiss and hum that were very prevalent and i was able to take them out without messing up the sound. the way it works is you let it take a noise print of an area in which there is only hiss and/or hum and nothing else and then with that noise print apply the noise redution to the whole wave and it will decrease the hiss/hum by a very large amount (the amt. is adjustable)

but really, it works like a charm if you use it right.

^^

Same principal as the cool edit way.

Its much better than gating it because your still gonna have the noise there when the gate opens.

Ive had this problem, and i must saym the sound forge plugin worked a treat!!!

Thanks very much to the person (DC-) who suggested it!
