recording audio in cubase?

Seem to have everything working in cubase except for recording audio..my vst instruments are fine-no latency.. playback of audio is fine..but when I record directly into cubase it stutters as it records..then on playback it makes litle ring noises where it stuttered when recording WTF? I can record into soundforge fine then load up the wav into cubase, but this defeats the object of cubase..? Also does anyone know of a software sampler that atcs like a proper hard one i.e I can record directly into it..as Halion etc arent samplers but sample players..personally Id like to be able to use halion as I would an akai..

Hey!

I had a terrible time getting cubase to work with recording audio and I have to tell you - it all comes down to your recording interface. I am not a pro by any means but what I can tell you is it is the same as any computer component that you buy - the better your interface, the better your latency. Here's my suggestion (obvious, but this is what worked for me)

1. Get a decent hardware interface/card - RME Hammerfall/Nuenendo Multiface (both are the same thing - RME). They are ASIO2 compatible, written with Cubase in mind (work with any product, but fine tuned for cubase) and are rock solid. They are pricey but after I wasted 2 months on getting Presonus Firestation and Echo Layla to work, I gave up and shelled out the cash. For interface and card alone it cost me $900 but it was $900 well spent. No latency, no pops, pure bliss. Think of it this way, if you were to waste 40 hours on getting your system optimized, would it be worth your time?? My time is worth more, so I paid to have a better gear.

If you decide not to buy another interface, read on:

2. Make sure you have enough horsepower on your system. Cubase requires a lot of ram - 512 or better. I have 1GB DDR 333 RAM and P4 2.2Ghz system. Video card is 64MB ATI Radeon 9500. Motherboard is Asus P4A8 - stable, intel 645 chipset. System is spartan - no extras are installed, it's not used for gaming or anything else - it is in essense a DAW.

3. WinXP is installed on audio-friendly Fat32 partition, drives are scanned daily for fragmentation and viruses (but only when no recording takes place). Antivirus is ran from another computer, to reduce overhead.

4. All unnecessary services, applications, settings are disabled - this frees up system resources to focus on recording.

5. XP is configured to run entirely in RAM, with no paging to hard drive. If you must page, install separate drive for paging.

Basically, once you optimize your system you will see improvement. Getting the latest drivers for your audio is also helpful.

that's common sense, in a nutshell.. See Sound on Sound article here:

thanks for the reply, I dont think any of it is TOO relavent though..! Im using the following athalon xp 2000 (running at 1.7) 512 meg ram..and a delta 4/10 audio card..as I said I dont have actual latecny problems..My vsts show no latency nor do I have any problems recording auiod (and monitoring it directly) with soundforge etc..even cubase records the audio..its just that it interjects strange ringing noises..theres no way this setup should have trouble doing basic audio recording with cubase..Anyone else..?

Hmmm.... perhaps I didn't quite understand your question, but what it sounded like was "stuttering" and "clipping" - ring, and stutter are associated with latency. Did you check your buffer settings in Cubase? What about sample size? What about ASIO config (assuming you are using ASIO and not WDM/Dx Oh well... hope you find out the problem!

Try steinberg forums, btw.

:D
hey cheggy
A delta 4/10 is a fine card to record on.

Have you got all the other tracks muted when you record. Maybe there is one that is coming through. I don't understant what you mean by "ringing" though. Does it sound like a phasing fx on the sound. Maybe you have a loop set up somewhere in your audio signal
