I installed XP on my Dell P3 933 Mhz I have 384 meg of ram and XP is starting to get bogged down. I use Kazza and The Hub. When I go to Task Manager I have 33 to 35 proscesses running and my processor is maxing out at 100%!!!
In win 98 I used to go into MS Config and end all the useless processes like aol tra, gator, ect. but how do I know which process are nessary in Win XP? I know Explorer and SYStray are nessary but what can I shut down?

I would suggest that you get a adware removal program. That way you can just remove gator etc. from your system and not worry about killing the process every time your start up.

One of the best is lavasoft's adaware

are you sure its at 100% it isnt the "system idle process" thats got the most %

if its not that what processes have the hightest proceser usage %?

click start, and run, and type msconfig.

Then click on the startup tab and remove anything u dont want to start up when the computer starts up

Obviously a lot more starts on boot than start up in the programs bit would suggest, heh :D

This should help. And also kazaa uses a stupid amount of cpu power, and also is rumoured to use yr spare cpu power for its own gains.

So download kazaa lite.

And also as stated above get ad.aware and run that. A great programme to get rid of spyware that runs in the background on yr comp :D

i forgot about that! part of gater(spyware program that kazaa uses) is a mini distributed computing project, id say its more than likley true, though i dont really wanna install anything containing gater

Also if u use ad aware with kazaa on yr sytem, ad aware will get rid of the spyware which will stop kazaa functioning. So make sure u get kazaa lite.

hmm, 384mb of ram shud be easilly enuff to cope with xp.. xp takes about 100mb (max) to run, so that leaves u with a spare 184mb to play about with.. i'd suggest regular defrags m8.. either that or virus scans, as u prolly know kazzaa is renouned for that.. one word.. klezz

if you havent already got "ad-aware" go get it from downloads.com, if there is anyspyware on your computer itll remove it, you computer shouldnt be having any troubles with XP.

service patch 1 (SP1) has some bug in where it can make some programs (and therefore your computer) run much slower. If you've installed SP1 that could be why
