Can anyone think of a DJ (who used to be a big name) who gave it away?

Seems to me like virtually all of the big name DJs of 5-10 years ago are still around in some capacity or another?

Larry Heard did that a few yrs ago. Gave up producing and deejaying for 7 yrs and has recently returned to it

Certain Deejays died...so they gave it up

tony de vit, larry levan, walter gibbons, ron hardy

I heard that Junior Vasquez retired in some capacity of deejaying. Certain deejays have given up producing or deejaying for some reason or another. Like Derrick May quit deejaying for a while and has gone into almost self imposed retirement from producing since 1993. Most big name deejays will probably retire in 10 yrs because most are mid 30's to mid 40's but then again, frankie knuckles is still deejaying, same with tenaglia.
