Hi trance-lovers!

I've just uploaded a new track to my website - www.bassconsortium.com

It's in the tracks section, called Picasso.

Here's a quick link:

Picasso 03

It's a remix of a track I wrote a few years ago.

Let me know what you think, and if you like it, check out Trinity on the same page.

Thanks guys

It seems to be a pretty common trend not to reply to some posts on this forum section, it's a shame really, I know how much it sucks not to get any feedback. So here comes some!

My first comments will be regarding the sound quality. I can't tell what the mp3 is encoded at because of this bollox quicktime mp3 player, but I am not hearing many highs. Sounds very dull in this respect. The track sounds almost like it has no mastering at all, just a dry recording out of the sequencer. Could use some improvement in this department.

Now onto the track itself. The intro is pretty decent, I do like the bassline and some of the percussion work. I would have added a bit more layers to spice up the intro prior to introducing the main melody. It also seems like that the filter-in part of the melody is a little too long. As for the melody itself, I kept on expecting it to go somewhere but it never did. I do like how you changed up during the second break, but it could still use some work.

So to conclude, I'd definitely work on the audio quality bit, on the melody bit, I'd introduce some more layers and attempt to make the melody not as monotonous (yes I know it's hard to come up with good melodies unfortunately).

Keep working on it mate!

Hi DC

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

You are quite correct when you say it has come straight out of the sequencer. The only processing I've done on the track is some compression on some of the parts and on the track as a whole.

I have bought some books on EQ but they all seem to be tailored towards rock bands rather than dance acts.

Please could you point me in the direction of somewhere I can read about EQ'ing dance tracks? A book or website, or anywhere else?

I would really appreciate any further help you could give in this respect.

Thakns in advance

Generally mastering is universal, the same techniques applie to all genres of music. I can't quite remember all the sources I've gathered my information from, since I lost my bookmarks some time ago, but I'll try to give you some helpful hints.

First of all, equalize each instrument seperately, and try only to keep the frequencies you want, almost always equalize everything < 40hz, and it's unlikely you'll hear it, unless its the bassline or drums, but even these require equalizing at times.

Try to give emphasis on the mids and highs.

Secondly, give each sound its own spectral space through the means of reverb, chorus, stereo enhancers, flangers, phasers, etc. This is very important in getting that 'full' sound. Also make sure each sound's volume levels are adequate.

And last but not least, get yourself a hold of some mastering software, Ozone and T-Racks seem to be preffered here, but I myself use Vintage Warmer. These will basically compress, equalize, excite plus a number of other things, your track, which is teh final step in getting a good sound.

I wish I had more information for you, I sincerely hope this is enough to get you started in the right direction.
