XP administrator password problems

Ok, we are having a major problem at work.
We have a small network set up in the lab and every computer has one administrator (Window XP professional). We always had it set up that the administrator didn't have a password. All of a sudden the logon started asking for a password and we can't figure out what that password is. We tried some program to reset the password (Off line password editor) but it didn't work. The profile still asks for a login password and we can't get it.
The problem with this is that we can't install new software that we need but we don't want to do an entire reinstall because off all the information stored on the computer (people's research).
The questions are, 1) Has this happened to anyone else?
2) Is there another program that can reset the one password (all the limited user passwords work)
3) Where can I get this program?
4) Is it hopeless? |

Sounds like some prankster's been having some fun with the PCs! XP won't start asking for a password unless somebody set it to do so.
As for resetting the password, I know that XP does let you create a "password recovery" disc (1.44 MB floppy disc), but you'd need to log in as the administrator to make one in the first place.
I would think that you shouldn't be able to hack into the administrator account, as that is the idea of password protection isn't it? But then again it it Mircosoft "security." |

If you ever have this problem again u can fix it using any user with full admin powers on XP.
Simply go into control panel, admin tools and computer management. Then local users and groups. right click on the user u wanna change the password for, or remove the password for make sure password never expires first. Coz it likes to make u change it every so often.
then right click again and click set password, and then just leave it blank.
Problem solved. It has come in very handy, and has gained access to many friends comps, lol :D |

the problem was that there was only one admin account on the computer. Obviously, it would have been painless if there were two. |

Ok, there a two way's you can go about doing this ;)
Track down the person who installed XP and find out what password the gave the Administrator account "because windows cant be installed without a password for the Administrator" that's one way of doing it.
Now, there is another way that it can be done, but you's try that way first and if you's can't find the person or company who installed XP lemme know and I'll tell you how to do it the other way ;). |
