is different software better for different trance sub-genres? i heard that a lot of good hard trance/hard style producers (flutlicht, shokk, guyver, etc.) use fruity. what do you guys suggest?
hey cheggy
I suggest using more than one program. Flutlicht/shokk use VAZ for their main lead synths.

I suggest using a VST host and then using lots of different types of synths, drum machines, samplers, etc. Fruity 3.5 is VST now, but there are also your mainstays, like Logic and Cubase.

what is VAZ?
hey cheggy
"VAZ" is a program called "Vaz Modular". Its a softsynth, its also a VSTi so it runs through programs like Cubase, logic, cakewalk, etc. I think the latest version is Vaz Modular 2010. No Idea how much it costs but you may be able to download a demo version from their site, not sure though.

Whats so surprising, the only thing about fruity is its name. Its well capable of making quality stuff, especially fl studio.

Well, DJ Natron and Reverb have been making music for many years and I don't think fruity was around then.
They probably used Cubase, so I can't see why they would change Cubase for Fruity if that's what they've worked with for so many years.
All I know is that they use Vaz for some of their synth sounds.

eh, i got the demo of fruity. The sounds built into it arent that great, but the effects are AMAZING. OK, so what defines something as a softsynth?

you use reason right?
so Substractor and Malstrom are soft synths
you want a defenition ... eh...software that emulates what a hardware synth can do.
