The techno dilemma.........
View this Thread in Original format
SportTrance
I'm sure we all visit a non-music related board every now and then, and have all ran into atleast one thread with the following title "anyone know any good techno?"

Anyway, in todays world, there is a STRONG confusion currently on the word techno and what it really is in todays music industry. The problem with this dilemma, is technically, neither sides are wrong. Unfortunately in todays music world, if someone who watches MTV asks you what you listen to, you can't help but throw the words tribal or detroit right in front of techno. Simply to show you don't mean the "entire" category as they know techno to be, to avoid any explanation for a lost cause. However, they're not exactly wrong. At one point, techno was completely different than what it is today.

I guess what really bothers me about this situation, is techno itself, isnt getting the justification/respect I believe it deserves today. I honestly could care less if anyone else listens to it, however, what BOTHERS me is to see someone classify popular trance DJs, as techno. IMO its complete mislabeling and solid ignorance.

Fact is, if 1000 un-educated listeners asked ME for techno, I can assure you, 90% would reply and say "no, i want that stuff I hear at the local club". Infact, every mainstream club go-er has probably never REALLY heard the techno as we know it today. Unfortunately, the problem is even more of a problem in europe, where you will NOT hear anything related to liebing or rush in a "techno club".

Fortunately we're able to easily distinguish what people mean when they want techno, but just as people have been able to differentiate and seperate rnb, rap, and hip hop, it'd be nice if they could do the same with "dance". I guess this is all just one of the many sacrifices or "sufferings" we have to live with as long as this music world is underground (in the US atleast). I thank the lord it is everyday, and if this is all I have to deal with to keep it that way, it could go on forever for all I care.

any comments/opinions are welcomed.

Dude, I totally understand your plight here. But..

Quite frankly, unless electronic music is a cultured thing in your area (as it is in Europe)- you can not expect people to point out the differences. The reason people in your area can distinguish between rap/hiphop/rnb is because urban music styles are already infested into thier everyday culture.

People in detroit i bet can distinguish detroit techno from other forms of electronic music, for example.

Instead of using the word "techno" as an umbrella term for all dance music, they should use "electronic" instead.

yo, bro, listen 2 ma techno ejay beatz!!!!!1

now, seriously, its a real pain in the ass that they call it "techno" instead of "dance", or "electronic" or something. but this just goes to show how underground the techno scene is, like 99% of the ppl that use the word dunno wtf they're talking about, lol.

if techno was all electronica then rap is techno, haha.
eminem doesn't even know his own genre of music

i feel u....

prime example: tomaz vs filterheadz - sunshine and i love techno theme

often mistaken for not being techno (even by people who been listening for awhile!)

yeah, there is huge confussion about techno. I've been wondering myself as well, let alone people who classify every electronic genre as "Dance". Which really pisses me off. Some friend of mine, when I told him I'd get by a store to get a few vinyls told me, hey, get one or 2 for me as well. Techno preferably. And when I told him to give me a better description about what exactly he would like, he said, get me some atb or sth. and I was...
At first I told him that |Atb| isn't really connected with techno and then explaining that he has a really false idea of what techno is. And that he probably hasn't heard any techno tracks for the last 7 years:whip: You can't expect to hear techno from the radio!!!!:eyes:

Anyhow, can you say a few names connected with techno?
I have forgotten a few I knew.-I don't really know how this can happen to a music addict like myself. shame on me!

Sandstorm was one of the most impacting trance tracks ever, whether you like it or not. It just got overplayed, like PPK - ResuRection.

and who gives a about people calling all the dance music techno? if they like it - then please, i will just have another reason for a smile:)
Orbax
sandstorm was important till it ruined everything

SportTrance
heh, like I said, It really doesn't matter to me what they call, one benefit is it sure as hell lets you know REAL QUICK who knows whats going on and who doesn't.

As far as sandstorm, yeah, it was a major "break through" , unfortunately it got over played like a hooker in brooklyn, then eventually completely dropped, crashed, and burned until incineration. I still remember the first night I heard that track ON THE RADIO. I admit, I did have some giggles here and there simply because I had remembered hearing it in jules set from years and years ago. Ahhh, this country, isn't it great?

Anyway, before we confuse the hell out of any new guys readin this, darude is not techno, infact, im not sure how that track really got into this thread, but iz ok. :)

Anyway, long live techno. :)

What can we do to change it? If a person likes electronic music, explain to them what the differences are. If they don't like it... what difference will it make for them? It's like teaching a tranceaddict the differences between punk-rock and punk-ska: if he doesn't listen to it, why would he want to learn more about it? It's not like they will become better people just because of this extra info.

Nobody needs to be an encyclopedia after all ;)
