When I think about quitting, I imagine this scenario:
Me and my friend listening to a compliation CD with every song on it pro or commercial releases, except I've burned my track onto the CD, the one that all of my blood and tears went into, and after the CD's over I say "Guess which one is mine?" If he can't guess which one, or if he has a hard time, I know I've reached my goal.
That's why I tweak a patch until my head spins. That's why I play for hours just to get the right melody. |

| is it just me or is percussion the hardest part of making a track? At least, that is the hardest part to get a pro sound out of...:thepirate |

i feel that i do improve, ive only REALLY seriously been at it 5/6 months, i was producing before that, but honestly, i was playing, i never finnished anything....
but yeah,i do feel i am really improving, knowledgewise especially....
i owe most of it to forums such as this one, and most of all, samplecity.net, which is a fantastic community where people ALL contribute (run by a fellow ta too :P). |

Same thing here, iv'e been playing with music production for about 7 years but only the last year or so have i begun to put together complete songs.. also, i've been experimenting with different styles, not only trance but hardtrance, techno, ambient and my latest project is a drum n' base tune wich is turning out ok. (damn hard to get it mixed correctly tho..)

I feel like sometimes I can go quite a few songs without feeling like I did any better - or more like I have all these awesome ideas floating in my head but when it comes time to output them to the computer I can't get it out right. I usually make the most progress when I'm listening to a pro track again and again and just click and go, "aw dang thats how they do that". I just wish I had a faster computer - its tough as hell to be creative on a 500Mhz PC (blame my wife not me).
And yeah, percussion is like the hardest to get that 'pro' sound, but I'm recently thinking maybe I should do each part (hi hat, clap, kick, etc) on its own track with its own EQ and sends, then route them all to a master drum track where theres one compressor to even them out. Do you think that would work with getting more of a punch? I dunno...

yes! the only problem is making sure that you dont have too many of one high frequency. :( I know when i EQ (hi hats especially) I put to much trebble, and it kinda hurts to listen to. I don't really know a lot about compression. I've kinda been focusing on other things :) but try it! Experimenting is one of the most important parts of producing, imo.
Etherium, to answer your question. I'm in Dallas :) |

after producing for 3 years, and making over 50 tracks, I can say that my skill level has increased dramatically. I go back to some of my earlier tracks and I think how on earth could I have ever made something so bad. :p
Anyways, I hear an improvement in every track I make. Mostly technical improvements, with sound quality, construction, overall flow, and just how professional it sounds in the end. The melody and actual notes of the tracks don't seem to evolve as much, but they do advance at a slower pace. |
