Dumb headphone question...

...I was reading through the rather lengthy sticky headphone thread, and it's been quite useful.

My question about the Sony "V6" headphones - they are the "MDR-V600s", as in the URL/pic below?

Also, do they the ear cup assemblies swivel (rotate)?

Thanks,

DJ Kibon

I am not sure but I think the V6 and MDR-V600s are different. The V6 was discontinued and replaced by the MDR-V600s, from what I hear the V6 are much better then the MDR-V600s. By now I think it would be really hard to find a pair of V6s because they are so old.

Really difficult to decide which headphones I should buy as my first "club" set. I want to start checking out a local amateur DJ night at Majestik, and the phones I have right now are likely not going to be up to the task.

Looking at the Sony MDR7506 now, which is about $200 CND, as well as the Sennheiser HD280, about $175. Going to check out a local store that has these all on display when I make my purchase.

They are different. The ones you want are the V6's.

the MDR-V600 is definitely not the same as the V6.

the V6 is a far superior headphone, and also cheaper.

the MDR 7506 is virtually the same as the V6 though.

I recently bought the HD280s, and i am satisfied with them. However, i think i would rather have had the MDR 7506

Thanks for your opinion. There's a local store that supposedly has both the Sony and the Sennheisers on display. I'm going to bring a CD and take a good listen to both of them before I make a decision.

Do the MDR-7506 headphones have swiveling earcups? If they don't, that's actually kind of a big deal for me.

they don't have the front to back swivel
but they do have the up and down swivel
and yes, the v6 and v600 are VERY different phones
the v6 and 7506 are almost the same headphone, i think the difference is a gold plated connector on the 7506

One important thing to know about the sennheisser HD280s is that they require some "burn-in" time. When i first listened to mine they sounded like crap. I went to a hi-fi forum, and was advised to let them burn-in for at least 40 hours before even listening, and about 100 before making a decision.

what you do is turn them up to just where it starts to get uncomfortably loud, and them take them off, and turn them up just a little bit louder. let them play like this for long period of time, this will burn them in. I let my 5 disc changer play them like this for 3 or 4 days, and they sound MUCH better now.

obviously the store is not going to let you do that. but, at least you are lucky enough to have a store that has these cans, i had to get them over the internet! just make sure the store has a 7 day return policy or something like that.

Check out www.etronics.com they sell the V6, you can have it shipped into Canada for a price reasonably less than buying the 7506 locally. They were $60 US when I got them. Keep in mind that there's going to be extra cost for bringing them across the border but its still a good deal.

a good pic of the V6's

The Sony V6 are cheaper than the Sony 7506 even though they are the same headphones; est. at $69.99 for V6s, compared to $89.99 for MDR-7506 in U.S. dollars. The only thing to know is that it is harder to find the V6s. Might want to check out Yahoo Shopping for more prices.

you can find the v6's at http://www.djmart.com
