SARS in Toronto - a textbook media circus event

| Personally i think it's overhype gone awry. To me an epidemic is when thousands of perfectly healthy people get sick and die a quick but painful death while bleeding from every orifice. This is instead a flu like virus that affects 200 people in a city of 6 million and kills 15 old people. I think influenza and pneumonia has a greater death rate! Most people who get SARS recover, only the very old and those with complications seem to be dying (which is the exact same outcome of common pneumonia) This is just another media circus event just like the half truths and misquotes of the "rave epidemic" a few years ago. If we listed daily death rates from pneumonia, car accidents, and other common fatalities with such vigour we'd never leave home! I am more worried about west nile because mosquitos are everywhere and this disease really does cut down healthy young people in their prime. The sad part is that tourism, asian business and Toronto's entertainment facilities are suffering needlessly. |

| update: the canadian dollar has lost half a cent today thanks to the WHO warning and economists have already predicted a recession thanks to all this overhype. I'd hate to see what would happen if a real epidemic broke out! |

this is plain stupid IMO, its not even close to be bad like the world health organization puts it.
The worst is people will not come to Canada all together even tho its a huge country and not really affected in whole. |

i think the point is that SARS has the POTENTIAL to become an epidemic because it is highly contaigious.... so while it may not be an epidemic, it might have been had the city not taken these crazy precautions...
one doctor in toronto was quoted in the star as calling the whole travel advisory "bull" (course they can't print the par inthe paper, =P)... but yeah, the media is blowing this way out of proportion... i think they should let doctors and the medical profession decide what's right for the city, instead of printing stories to "put people on alert" (in other words, start a panic) |

They will come to the US. :)
WHO is a very respected organization, but yes it is overhyped. |

It's interesting to note that the US government 'lost' 100 cases of SARS two days ago as a result of 'redefining' the criteria.
There are about 200 people in an area of about 5 million who have SARS, and all of the cases are traceable -no widespread community outbreak.

Scared of SARS? No way... my g/f lives right where the whole thing started. She travels on a rammed subway everyday for 45 mins. Still SARS free.
If people are scared of dying, then they should stop smoking or lobby to ban handguns, not avoid toronto. |

| Aids is an epidemic, Sars is nothing but an overhyped pneumonia. If people choose to avoid Toronto or China because of this they had best put their heads in the sand and prepare for the end of the world. |
