Anyone gannin to this? I am via the free bus from St James'. If you are going, don't forget to bring a spare set of keys to goad the SMB.

Any predictions on the scoreline? I think there'll be a load of trouble in mackemland but on the pitch we should hammer them.

Aye you had to get your application in pretty early. I think I made mine 3 days after they went on sale, I was surprised I got one actually. The atmosphere's going to be ing mental, I can't get any sleep I'm so excited. There might not be many of us allowed in but we'll outchant the bastards.

There was a huge policing operation which meant the fans were separated a long time before and after the match, but most of the trouble occurred with fans who didn't take the police escort. Just like with the Turkey game the police detained known hooligans from the Newcastle Gremlins and Seaburn Casuals before any trouble flared off.

About 60 or 70 coaches drove all the Newcastle fans into mackemland under police escort, every junction for 10 miles was blocked off by police, helicopters above were looking for signs of bother. The trip there and back on the coaches was safe, I don't see how anyone could have done anything with that many police around. We were getting loads of threats from locals once our coaches got into no mans land and into mackemland, and we returned the favour.

Hundreds of Newcastle fans tried to buy tickets in the mackem section and travelled into Sunderland by metro (they must have big balls!). The mackems tried to stop them from getting to the ground and fans clashed in Sunderland. Apparently police tried to form a cordon around the Newcastle fans and herd them to the ground but they said they couldn't get through the mackems, there were far too many of them. All sorts of (mostly bottles) was being thrown at the Newcastle fans (who were apparently very outnumbered) and the limited police couldn't do much. They considered postponing kickoff because the police couldn't find a way to get many of the Newcastle fans into the ground, there were apparently just way too many mackems blocking them off. Before kickoff 40 arrests were made in Sunderland, I have no idea how many were made afterwards but I suspect a lot. I saw a few people denied entry into the ground for being "too drunk", they didn't look that pissed, but the police weren't taking any chances.

After the game we were kept in the ground over half an hour (I can't remember as we were too busy enjoying the moment). As our coaches were waiting to leave I could see hundreds of toon fans being escorted out of the ground by loads of police, I presume they were going to the mackem metro. When our coaches got back to Newcastle there seemed to be a fairly large police presence at Newcastle central station as well, there was probably some bother on the metros (the cities are now connected by metro - a stupid idea).

Not much bother inside the stadium as there were loads of police around. The noise was the same as at any Newcastle - Sunderland derby, you don't get any louder than this - anywhere. Some of the mackem fans were , but the ones nearest the south stand (where we were) were the most vocal and threatening. Nothing riled them up more than thousands of geordies shaking our keys at them, as well as the thousands of posters we held up laughing at them.

After Newcastle scored there appeared to be some bother to the left of us which was quickly dealt with by police. As far as I could see noone managed to breach the police lines to get at each other.

That's all I know at the moment mate, from the news and from word of mouth. I've been trying to find more news on the net but as you probably know the north-east is always neglected. All in all the police escort from Newcastle to Sunderland and back was pretty unbreachable and worked. Next time the sides face (which could be a while) I think any fans wanting to cause trouble will just take the metro into Sunderland, but it's difficult for Newcastle fans as they're bound to be ambushed going that way.

There were tonnes of chants in the ground, too many to remember. Aside all the usual toon chants here are some I can remember, I'll just put the gist of them as you should recognise the tunes used:

"You should have stuck with the monkey"
"Have you ever seen a mackem in Milan" ends with "Have you !"
"We'll meet again..."
"Peter Reid's got a ing proper team"
"What's it like to play in Grimsby?"
"Nationwide! Nationwide!"
"...shoot the mackem scum..."
"Mackems, in the nationwide"
"Nice one Sunderland, Nice one Sunderland" (pisstake of a local advert for Sunderland)
"the fulwell end is always full..."
"sunderland's going down" (sung to the same tune as "sunderland till i die" to drown it out)
"geordies, we're the northern rock, mackems, in the nationwide"
"you're just a small town in durham, small town in durham"
"oh I do like to be beside the seaside ... with a shotgun in my hand shooting mackems of the sand"
"Newcastle in Milaniooo Sunderland going downiooo"

Plus all the usuals like "we hate sunderland", "what do you think of sunderland?...", "you're only free ticket mackems", "sad mackem bastards" etc. and of course all the usual toon chants without reference to the mackems.

Excellent post mate. Cheers. One question from someone not exactly an expert in North-East rivalries. What's the reference to keys that winds up Sunderland so much??
evil_bastard
It's a pisstake of their whingy accent:

"weez keez are theeyz" (whose keys are these?)

I forgot to mention, thousands of mackems chanted Rule Britannia when Olivier Bernard came on - Sunderland is a breeding ground the national front. I wonder how they feel about Bellion?

Here's the only picture I can find from inside the ground, I didn't take a camera myself. NUFC.com should put their review up soon which should include some pics.

I'm definitely going to the next derby, whenever that'll be. Hell of an experience! The main derby next season will be against the smogs, but they have banned wearing chemical suits and gas masks to the match cos it incites trouble with the local inbreds.
