If you want genres, there's a map I'm working on, but it's a bit confusing for people who are not really familiar to electronic music (there are like 70 sub-genres, you see? :D). However, if you start from the middle, you may have a good idea of how things evolved to current genres :) (http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...genre+literally)
It depends on what your focus is: are you talking about electronic music in general or mostly trance? If you're talking about electronic music in general, you can always always post things about the first synthesizer ever (something like "Theremin"), the first electronic music group (Kraftwerk), the disco era,... the differences between the genres (their goals, their structure, they messed-up philosophy :D). E.g.: Trance is rather emotional, while drum'n'bass is "agressive".
If it's mostly about trance, you can say where it came from| quote: | | Disco -> (Chicago) House -> (Detroit) Techno -> (German) Techno -> (Acid) Trance ;) | Then you talk about its structure, the big names and stuff. However, I wouldn't choose just one genre if I were you, because it would be interesting only for those who like trance. On the other hand, if you show electronic music as a whole, people will see that there are differences, and they might even like one particular genre ;) |

Steve-
In any presentation, you should always narrow your focus to your main points. You presented a number of points here that can all have presentations in of themselves. What do you really want to talk about? What is the message you wish to give to your audience?
Are you here to educate them in what electronica is all about? How it originated? History of? Influences?
Do you wish to talk about the different genres of electronica and how they came about? How one can differentiate between each genre?
What is normally played out at clubs? How clubs are a part of our dance culture? How they are a part of our society in general?
And lastly, all the politics involved with electronica and such? The Anti-Rave act that just recently got passed? How our society has misconstrued perceptions of clubbers/ravers?
Oh yeah, and how drugs are part of the dance culture or lack thereof?
Tell me what you want to focus on, because you can take your presentation in a number of different avenues. I suggest you pick one avenue and go with it in good descriptive detail with good facts to support your direction. Otherwise, talking about a little bit of everything in general sweeping terms might tend to lack a little substance, IMHO.

Thanks everyone for the VERY informative replies. I'm not going too far in depth with this project, as its only for my computer class; to actually show the instructor that I know how to use PowerPoint. Nonetheless I want it to be top notch, so I'm adding live videos from Armin, Ferry, and Tiesto, as well as songs in every slide. So I guess trance will be my main genre focus, but I will show all the sub-genres of EDM with sound samples as well. I'll be showing pictures of raves/clubs/musical events, as well as talking about the latest RAVE Act and what is going on politically. I can use alot of this information everyone provided me, it gives me a really good idea of what I'm going to do. I also am including, people invlovement with the music, like US, cause' I think forums like this have no comparison to any other musical genre out there. This is not only music, but a universal language and a way of life to many poeple.
THanks once again everyone.
Peace,
Steve |
