SARS: Worldwide Epidemic or Media Overhype?

I think it is just the media overhyping SARS because
an interesting story = more revenue
ppl need to look at the actual data... In Toronto... 23 people out of a city of millions have died... that's like less than 0.001% of the population of Toronto dying. The WHO advising ppl not to travel to Toronto is just totally BS in my opinion. The chances of getting hit by a car or dying from smoking is still way higher than the chances of getting SARS and dying. WHY DON'T PEOPLE WORRY ABOUT SOMETHING ACTUALLY MORE SIGNIFICANT LIKE ABORTION OR HOMOCIDES INSTEAD OF SARS? Sure, it is important to contain the disease... but by no means should anyone be the least worried...
just wanted to get this off my chest as everytime i check the news.. it's always SARS SARS SARS :whip:
post your thoughts and reactions to this topic plz... |

overhype
odds of being struck by lightening 1 in 1.6 million
odds of getting sars
exactly the same. |

I think you have valide points. Yes if you look at it from a statistic point of view, you have more chances of getting hit by a train then getting SARS, but truth is the fact that if i come in contact with that 1 person and he caughts in my face and as i result i die less than a week later i mean...ITs worth worrying about!!!!!!!
Sure the media often overhypes everything, but i mean 23 ppl died in TO and i wanna know about it....maybe if u knew someone who died from it you would think differently...Look at it this way, those 20 ppl came in contact with how many ppl before beeing diagnosed?...But i do agree that the media often dramatises everything.
*my opinion

Where on EARTH did you get this information!!?
First of all, 21 people have died all over Canada from SARS, which was not localized entirely in Toronto. Secondly, SARS cases are currently on the decline. Third, there is a 95-98% recovery rate even if you do catch it!
MEDIA OVERHYPE!!! COME TO TO! |

First came the day of the plague.
Civilisation threatened by the death-dealing pestilence. Cities choked with rotting corpses. The air heavy with the ear-shattering silence.
Stunned survivors emerged, immune to the plague. A handful out of millions, they sought out others like themselves to slowly and painfully build a new world.
Then came the dreams.
Dark dreams that warned of the coming of the dark man...the apostate of evil, warlord of the charnel house, prince of torture and death.
In the far west his empire was growing. It is the time of the Apocalypse. The last Titanic struggle between good and evil for the mastery of the world.

OVERHYPE.
SARS is a small problem. it gets media attention, because people tune in to watch it, and thus the media can sell ads for more money, and thus the head honcho of the media can get a raise by putting on stories about SARS.
stories about aids, or cancer, or diabetes get no media coverage, because they are not sensational, and people turn of the TV.
SARS is the latest bullring threaded through your nose.
these are real epidemics:

Seriously... you've got a higher chance of dying from common pneumonia or from driving a car. |

| exactly...SARS is honestly nothing to worry about. People treat this as if it were some major epidemic. I'd be more afraid getting hit by a stray bullet or a car than catching SARS at the moment. |
