Having never gone to Stereo, i never realized that it was a world class after-hours of that calibre. I always had them behind Sona (before 514 bought it) and Aria. I think a visit is warranted in the near future...

I think dj mag (i think) put it as one of the top 5 clubs in north america a few years ago. But I didnt know anyone would have considered it top 5 in the world. I mean to put it up there with space, priviledge, pacha, and countless others im sure that we dont know about is somewhat shocking.

I was surprised too DiscoeJoe but that's what the clip said. Maybe they made a mistake and meant North America...? Either way, it's worth a visit :disbelief :tongue3 :disbelief

i think this club would be more than legendary if it didn't have that "gay" stamp on it and the music was a bit more diversified.

that's why i prefer Aria over anything else

I would doubt that anyone outside Quebec would know about the gay stamp, let alone Dj mag. Although I find it extremely hard to beleive that Stereo would even make it top 5 NA. Maybe Canada, but I don't think it beats Space, Roxy, Avalon, the Guv, Aria etc... in North America.

I am not sure but when he says top 5 "After Hours" I think he means in its true form. The Club Doesnt open till 2:00am or something like that where a bunch of the others stated open at normal times.

It depends what the criteria is. It's not just about bringing in the best DJs and packing the house and calling yourself world class.
There is decor, sound system, ventilation, maintenance of the washrooms etc etc Who knows what variables they used to come to their determination?

I mean look at Aria, it pulls in more world class DJs than Stereo and is definitely more popular but it's a converted movie theatre, just a big cement room. The building was not designed to be a club. Any venue that is designed to be a club is probably ahead of Aria on that side which was probably big in their evaluation.

A little off topic but I love the originallity of Aria. I remember the first time I set foot in it was for Danny Howells during the Jazz Festival a little under a year ago and hated it. I thought the benches were wooden and uncomfortable, the crowd had no idea who he even was, and there were a lot of sketchers but I have since been twice and like it better each time. The crowd is getting a little better except the shirt-less wonders that walk around. All in all I think both clubs have something unique to offer.

K back to topic.....

I remember, that top5 classification. Its 1999-2000 I think, since then many clubs opened and changed... I don't think it would make top 5 again.

FYI Stereo is an ex-movie theatre too ;)

And, don't they design movie theatres so the sound comes out nice?

I knew i could get burnt like that not knowing what used to be there at the Stereo location. Either way, i'm not placing one above the other, just trying to make sense of the ranking. The sound at Aria is good :gsmile:

let's just say that right now Montreal 0wns any city in north america , and it 0wns Toronto big time (all i hear from the tdot peeps is the club was ultra over packed , too much ginos , too much cracked out asians , no great sound , too small venue , etc ...) :D
Czaoth
MTL isn't the city in North America that is most similar to Europe
for nothing :toocool: :gsmile: :toocool:
