How to make an ok-quality vocal sample SHINE?

I have some vocal samples that are OK in quality but not especially good. What are some general mastering techniques to make the vocals "shine", make them sound as if they were recorded in a studio?
I already know that delay, reverb, and echo can enhance a sample.
But, for example, the sounds "s" and "z" sound kinda muffled; there's no ambiance or atmosphere; and these are just a few examples. I think you know what I mean.
So... what are some techniques? :):) thanks
Also - I'd like to do something crazy with vocals, is there a plug-in or tool for this, or will I have to experiment on my own? |

| use vocoder to make crazt talk sound from normal voice. Get good mike to sound pro like not vcrap, and get windy coer t6op[rptect from spit and wind on talking onto mike like speaker cover burt not for speaker. |

Sorry, sober edit here.
Basically, you know the theory " in, out", well if the vocal is recorded on a bad mic, it isn't going to sound as good. So a decent mic is the first step. You can also try some eq to bring out the higher frequencies and to make sure that the T's and S's don't come out badly, you need to put some kind of cover over the mic that will stop spitting and air gushes. You can buy one, or even simplier, use the dust covers from speakers, just hold them between your mouth and the mic. |

Yeah, it's pretty hard to make a low quality recorded vocal sound good by using fx. If you are the one recording the vocals with your own equipment, I suggest renting a good mic. They are not that expensive to rent if there's a music store around you.
If that is impossible, I just recommend EQing it well. It usually sounds best to take down some lower frequencies, and add alittle to the higher end. But just fool around with them until it sounds good. |

1. good mic
2. if not such a good mic, use noise gate and try to eq out some of the noise...
3. eq w/ the track
4. compress tight, vocals are the most difficult things to master imo... u just cant get it just right...
5. ANTARES AUTO TUNE!!!!! for that sher-like fx... its s the vocals sounding like synths... :)
6. if uve got some chants/opera sort of singing i allways like to make some cutting with it... esspecially when u got a low voice and a high voice, u can put the low vocal play normal and play with the high voc's volume... i just love doing that :)
7. if ur vocal is just talking like and not singing notes then aplly some reversed reverb an changing delay to it, making it mor dramatic...
8. try to bring the vocal in a freq. that no other inst. use at the time he is playing...
9. u can use some types of ovedrives on it...
10. experience things for urself :)
thats all for today folks :) |
