Im guessing it refers to a regular 4/4 beat.
This is pretty much the standard beat for all trance music. |

It means:
x---x---x---x---
--o---o---o---o-
----@-------@---
where x is your kick, o is your hat, @ is your clap, etc.
Of course this is just a generic example. Basically anything in 4 4 time with a kick on every downbeat. |
