Sounds to help a build up (shishing, booming, etc)

Ok so of the many things I'm lacking, I'd most like to learn how to make or where to attain those truly trance-y and hi-quality type ambient sounds.... Like when a build-up is happening and theres a huge weird rumbling or noise form or something, and it just makes the song all the more powerful when it comes back in. So far all I've been able to figure out is taking a low low sine and having it lower lower lower for that bass-drop we talked about in some other thread, and putting a low-pass on some noise (which sounds cheesy).
WHat do you guys all do?

Run a kick drum with some decent bass content through a loooong reverb for that typical long decaying "distant explosion" type effect.
Another one you can try is to program your synth with white noise for the oscillators rather than sine / square etc. Then set the (low-pass) filter envelope to start closed (i.e. no sound) and open up fully for that rushing swoosh type noise. This tends to sound a bit boring straight off, so try running it through some sound manipulation effects, or apply some severe EQ. |

| There are a lot of (free) softsynths that are made for this purpose, like the 'Swoosh' etc. Just search Kazaa or PM me :) |

| Try the various revv cymbyls and filtering of synths(ex raising or cutting the cuttof or res)... |
