| DO YOU COME FROM MANCHESTER ? DO YOU HAVE RELATIVES IN MANCHESTER ? DO YOU LIVE NEAR MANCHESTER ? If you say NO to these three questions, you are an ideal person to become a fan of MANCHESTER UNITED |

I both don't like them, but it's funny to see Arsenal lose everything after Wenger said they would win everything easy this year. I hope Southampton wil take the FA cup |

The thing is, most people in the UK don't make a conscious decision to support a club, it just happens.
Can any of the UK members remember choosing to support your team? I can't. I've been a Newcastle fan as long as I can remember, I don't know where it all began or at what age. And that's natural for most people, they quite like the idea that they've never known anything but their own club, and will support it till the day they die. It's that kind of loyalty which really binds a community just like religion (if not far better), and it creates fantastic camaraderie in the stands.
People who choose a club obviously weren't 'brought up' with a club. That's fair enough, espescially if you enjoy football at it's best and live outside a country which really takes it seriously. It's the ones who consciously choose Man Utd, without any reason, who get branded gloryhunters. Some defend their case, saying that they've supported Man Utd through hard times. To be honest, it's a long time since Man Utd has really seen 'hard times', and even longer since they witnessed a sustained period of miserable depression. Newcastle haven't won anything in my lifetime, ten years ago when the shiny new Premier League was introduced and teams like Man Utd and Liverpool were enjoying Sky coverage, we had just escaped relegation to the 3rd division! So please don't give me this "through thick and thin" bull, watching Man Utd take a pasting one weekend and still sticking around hardly constitutes loyalty. When all your star players have left, your most hated rivals revel in a higher division, trips to European stadiums seem like a distant dream, your club has seen depressing decline over many years and you find yourself getting worked up about teams like Cambridge United, that's when you know your club has hit "hard times". |
