People that say that the mixing sucked have issues with the way he transitioned from different genres and vibes in a brusque manner. I actually enjoy those contrasts, as they are very musical and all have a rationale that does wonders in the dancefloor. Tiesto once again proves his talent for in-key mixing by doing amazing harmonic/melodic progressions from track to track. Most of you don't even know how that system works so it's quite funny that you call him a bad dj. Nyana is indeed the best of both worlds, representing the harder and softer sides of Tiesto's sets as of late. Another eternal classic by Tijs ;)

I have an idea... let's call Tiesto's mixing something that can only be appreciated by an elitist group of classically educated musicians... that way we can fabricate reasons to defend his technically deficient mixing...

Care to elaborate that thought or would you just like to carry on the random bashing?

I don't need to fabricate anything, his over 20 compilations (all made in live turntables) speak for themselves. Obviously not only classically educated musicians can appreciate his mixing since most people that like Tiesto's mixes, and even Tiesto himself, are not classically trained in any way. I've never said that Tiesto has great beatmatching abilities, I know he doesn't compared to a lot of other djs out there. Tiesto's mixing is brilliant and unique for other reasons, he has a great ear for music and his mixing shows it off. I don't mind a shady transition where the beats aren't perfectly synchronized as long as the tracks are laid out and connected with good taste.

If there are any trainwrecks in these CDs please let us know about them so we can discuss them concretely. There are couple of shady-but not off-transitions but as I said before that's part of the live mixing, no human being is a perfect metronome.

You hate Tiesto yet you keep downloading his music and going to his gigs. Why bother? Do you get off from the thrill of flaming and criticizing his work?

I don't hate tiesto, In fact I love him and I'm looking forward to saturday, BUT...

I agree that the mixing on this compilation cd is mediocre at best. I'm not gonna whine about beat-matching, because I don't think it's that bad at all (better than on ISOS 3), but some of the transitions are just standard (read unimaginative

and sometimes the songs just don't fit well together (basslines/keys/tempochanges etc.)I'm not saying I don't like variety in a set, but it has to have a certain flow to it, and frankly, I miss that when listening to (insert random example) "u write the rules" into "nothing"

luckily the tracklist more than makes up for this!

maybe tiesto should try not using fitting this many *BIG*, WONDERFUL (can't stress this enough!) tunes on his compilation cd's and play some tracks that are less know, maybe even less quality (individually) but that contribute to each other, making an overall better compilation.

as an example, I'd like to suggest you go and compare

DJ Tiësto - Summerbreeze to
Noel Sanger - Summerbreeze II (cd2)

not many floorfillers on the last one, but noel sanger managed to make an IMO much better blend/journey compilation on the 2nd one.

you know.. after listening to nyana quite a few times.. i've realized something.. the great "hype" on this album well.. please don't hate me but.. i think this album just threw up some delicious tunes with average mixing skills put into it.. the track selection was nice but i didnt like the way how he ordered it..

it's a good cd.. but.. definitly not tiesto's best Imo

mixing isn't the greatest I have to say, sometimes I was like wtf is this really tijs behind the decks?? (or however it was mixed)

I carried out lengthy arguement about this after seeing him here in october. If you're really so interested in valid reasons, go do a search in the New York thread about it. This mix cd is just a continuation of his ever growing disregard for good mixing.

I always end up arguing with you. ;) I'm always criticizing his technical mixing skills and you always agree that he's lacking tachnical skill. So you're never really bringing up any good counterarguements to my claim but rather are just mentioning ways in which his mixing makes him unique and what not. I'M ONLY TALKING ABOUT TECHNICAL SKILL!

The reason I keep engaging in these arguements is because I really loved tiesto when I was first getting into trance in the mid and late 90s. He was really great up until early 2001 after which his mixing got really bad. I swore I'd never go to another one of his shows after last october but I've been hearing great things about him from friends who saw him at the WMC and I'm willing to give him another chance.

So, I'm gonna go see him next Friday and I'll see whether he's really improved. Otherwise, I stand by my original opinion.

Indy, I was hoping you wouldn't read this :D . Anyway, I think everyone has different reasons he or she goes and sees a DJ. Some people go for the track selection, some people for the energy/crowd. I go for the technical skill. That's why I'm making such a big deal about it. There's a lot of djing skill out there and there are plenty of bedroom djs who can pull off better transitions with the tracks tiesto's uses in his cd.
