Liberal U.S. media? Riiiight.

Getting a little tired about hearing how "liberal" our media is here in the U.S. I did a little digging and found an excellent summary on another forum that says otherwise:
Are you that brainwashed? Conservative Talk Radio is "attacked" by the Fairness Doctrine because it is nothing but lies and half truths and if they presented a honest representation of current events they would have no problems at all with the Fairness Doctrine. I say thank God we have it.
In a free society with freedom of the Press the media should have an adversarial role towards the government and its policies. The media should have questioned our military action in Iraq. The media should be critical of the Presidents tax plan. The media should be critical of the Presidents conservation policies. The media should be critical of the Presidents foreign policy.
If the media is nothing more than a cheerleader for the President then we no longer live in a free and open society.
As far as the myth of the liberal media goes I say What Liberal Media?
The Princeton Survey Research Associates released a report in November, 2000 for the "Project for Excellence in Journalism" documenting a news media biasagainst Democrat Al Gore. They reviewed 1,149 national stories from newspapersand television. The study found that the news media reported 24% positive stories for Bush, while only 13% positive stories for Gore. Similarly, news organizations reported 12% negative stories on Gore, and only 8% negative stories on Bush.
A 1996 Nexis search of sources used by major newspapers and broadcasters, show that 7,776 media citations were used from conservative think tanks (Heritage Foundation topping the list); 4,665 from centrist think tanks; and 1,837 from liberal think tanks. That means the news media used sources from conservatives 54% of the time, centrists 33%, and liberals 13%.
While the press has been unrelenting on a private sex scandal involving
Democratic President Bill Clinton, it was much less interested in covering the constitutional scandal that enveloped Republican President George Bush with Iran/Contra. A Nexis search of news stories from the New York Times, Washington Post, Time Magazine and Newsweek Magazine, shows that in one month, at the height of the Iran Contra scandal, 653 news stories were written about he scandal. Compare that to 995 stories written about the Clinton/Lewinsky affair at its height in one month.
KABC, an ABC affiliate in Los Angeles refused to air any anti-war protest stories during the Gulf war. This from staffers inside the station.
ABC's 20/20 program has never run a story critical of nuclear power. Come to find out, the show's producer Victor Neufeld's wife works for the nuclear industry.
Of all the guests on ABC's Nightline in an average year, only 6 % have
represented public interest groups, labor or racial/ethnic minorities. Only 13% were women.
Rupert Murdoch, an ultra right wing activist, (he initially offered Newt Gingrich a multimillion dollar book deal thru his Harper Collins publishing firm), owns the entire Fox media conglomerate, the Fox television network and Fox news channel. He also owns the New York Post and TV Guide magazine.
ABC's David Brinkley had to apologize for making insulting remarks about President Clinton on the air during the 1996 election. He now is a spokesman for a multimillion dollar corporation.
John Stossel, known for his ultra-rightwing pro-corporate views, is a regular reporter for ABC news.
CBS canned a 60 minutes story on tobacco company lies because of pressure from upper management.
NBC has squelched stories about boycotts of General Electric, its parent company.
CNN has no one as far to the Left as Pat Buchanan is to the right, on its nightly political show Crossfire.
NBC's reporter Pete Williams is a former Bush administration official.
CBS's and ABC's Diane Sawyer was a Nixon administration insider before landing a job covering the news.
Britt Hume of Fox News is a known conservative ideologue who used to play tennis with George Bush.
PBS has many shows dedicated to covering corporate America - Nightly Business Report, Adam Smith's Money World, Tony Brown's Journal, Wall Street Week, etc., but no shows dedicated to covering consumers or labor. PBS's longest running show is Firing Line hosted by ultra conservative William F. Buckley, the editor of the conservative National Review Magazine. Other shows hosted by conservatives regularly are: One on One , The McLaughlin Group and American Interests. Additionally, PBS has added a show that is based on
holier-than-thou conservative William Bennett's book "The Book of Virtues." (now we of course all know that William Bennett is nothing more than a hypocrite)
Talk radio is hosted almost exclusively by conservative talk show hosts, headed by Rush Limbaugh, Ollie North, Larry Elder, Michael Reagan and G. Gordon Liddy.
Former Republican presidential candidate and religious right leader, Pat Robertson, owns the Christian Broadcasting Network which airs nationwide. He also owns the Family Channel and a radio news service called Standard News.
The Washington Times was founded by ultra right wing extremist Sun Myung Moon, known for his controversial Unification Church.
Fox News is run by a former Reagan aid. It is known to have some of the most blatantly Conservative news bias in the business.
The Wall Street Journal employs some of the biggest liberal bashers in the country.
If you would like I can provide another litany of examples of the conservative bias in the media.
There has not been a single independent study showing any liberal bias what so ever in the mainstream media. In fact every independent study actually found the opposite with conservatives and their viewpoints getting more air time than liberals.
Somewhere in there you can add that Murdock who owns FOX just recently purchased DirectTV. Assuming it will pass the FCC (it will since it's head up by Bush's bitch, errr Colin Powell's son - Michael), he'll be able to control what another 100 million+ viewers watch on TV. And considering that the rules on media will soon be relaxed thanks to Michael Powell, we'll get to watch and listen to as much corporate-sponsored, conservative-controlled media as we could have possibly wish for! Yea Corporate Media! |

| Yea ... whoever says the US media is liberal is smoking crack. And people are actually saying that the US should deregulate the media??? If they think its bad now it would be 5 million times worse with deregulation. |

This is awesome. If only that could happen here! Christ, It would take Big Blue to calculate the number of impartialities here.
Note: After further review, Fox news has blatantly biased 4,565,891,654,257,698,169,168,762,401,885,236,978,158,158,015 bits of informatioin since it's spawning a few years ago. :whip: :whip: Imagine if this world had to grow up with it! |

you know what the funny thing is...
american media is so blatantly obvious in its bias!
occrider described it well when he said they musta been smoking crack not to realize it...
however, i can also see why people don't see it...the media there is all pretty much on the right wing of the spectrum it's not funny.
i literally stopped watching WWE for laughs and turned on newsnight with aaron brown (during the war) for the entertainment...
i really think aaron hates al-jaezera :D |

Objective reporting is impossible - the perception is influenced by the one perceiving it. |

Just because it's impossible means we shouldn't try?? World peace is impossible, too, but does that mean we shouldn't strive for it?
Of course no one news organization is not going to give the complete, unbiased truth. But when one organization comes around that blatantly disregards the truth, and puts the same political slant on every story, there is no reason to put up with it.
:whip: :whip: DIE, FOX NEWS, DIE!!!:whip: :whip: |
