Muzikaal gesproken zit we op een iets andere lijn. Wel heeft hij, net als ik, heel lang tegen de stroom in gezwommen. Er was soms kritiek op zijn muzikale aanpak. Hij heeft zich daar nooit door van de wijs laten brengen. Nu wordt hij daarvoor beloond. Ik gun hem zijn succes van harte. Hij heeft er hard voor gewerkt.''
Roger Oliveira, dance-programmeur Nighttown in Rotterdam:
,,Tiësto is baanbrekend geweest voor de dj's in Nederland. Tien jaar geleden werden Hollandse dj's uitgelachen. Ze waren hier wereldberoemd, maar kregen zelden een uitnodiging vanuit het buitenland. Je moet je onderscheiden en daar blinkt Tiësto in uit. Kijk, de zanger van de Skihut is heel goed, maar André Hazes krijgt de Arena vol. Zo werkt het ook in de danswereld. Er zijn een heleboel goede dj's, maar Tiësto is een toffe jongen, maakt goede platen, heeft het publiek op zijn hand én levert een constante kwaliteit. Dan word je overal ter wereld gevraagd.''
Ferry Maat, Soulshow/Radio 10:
,,Ik vind het echt een fenomeen dat een dj zoveel kaartjes verkoopt. Dat was vroeger niet denkbaar. Eerlijk gezegd ken ik de muziek van Tiësto niet, alleen zijn naam komt me bekend voor. Maar als je zoveel kaarten verkoopt, dan heb je toch wel iets bereikt. Zijn muziek is denk ik een trend. Reggae is op dit moment uit, maar kan volgend jaar weer helemaal terug zijn. Zo'n golfbeweging heeft de dansmuziek ook. Hij zit nu in de top.''
Eddy de Clercq, dj die house introduceerde in Nederland:
,,In Noorwegen ontdekte ik een paar jaar geleden dat hij ontzettend populair is. De kinderen vielen onderhand flauw als je zijn naam noemde. Zijn muziek spreekt een jong publiek aan. Het is catchy en heel commercieel. Dat spreekt mij niet aan. Ik mis de groove. Het is eendimensionaal, plat, zonder onderlaag. Het is niet verrassend dat een dj een stadion volspeelt. De dansmuziek zit na 20 jaar diep in de samenleving geworteld. Ik vind het een positieve ontwikkeling voor de dance en ben blij dat een enthousiaste, jonge man zoals Tiësto met liefde voor het vak dat voor elkaar krijgt. Zijn inzet waardeer ik ten zeerste.''
Ferry Corsten, dj/producer alias System F/Gouryella, werkt met Tiësto:
,,Hij maakt de juiste platenkeuze - voelt het publiek heel goed aan. Tijs draait gevoelsplaten die bij een grote groep aanslaan. Bovendien staat er een echte persoonlijkheid achter de draaitafels. Dat heb je van nature, of niet. Hij heeft natuurlijk ook het geluk dat trance wereldwijd een belangrijke muzieksoort is. Het is wel zo dat de stijl zich om hem heen heeft ontwikkeld. Tijs is een voorloper geweest. In het buitenland is dit concert volgens mij nog niet heel bekend. Het is in ieder geval een geweldig visitekaartje.''

As the first (dutch) world’s best DJ he performs solo in a stadium: Tiësto. Why is the man from Breda the best DJ in the world, or isn’t he as brilliant as he seems? We’ve talked to 6 music experts.

“His name attracted my attention when he made the remix of Delerium (Silence). That’s one of the few dance tracks that will survive time, just like Go by Moby or Children from Robert Miles. No matter how often you spin these tracks: they remain awesome. That’s the secret of a great track. It’s been put together very clever. We all have to be very proud that Tiësto is the world’s best DJ.
Tom Holkenborg, Junkie XL:
“Last year together we made Obsession for his solo album. Tijs is a very warm and nice person and still is that same person even when the succes came. Musically spoken we’re kinda different. He, just like me, long time rowed against the stream. Sometimes they criticized his musical approach. He never let that get in his way. Now he’s rewarded for that. I’m really happy for him that he finally got his succes. He worked hard for it.

“Tiësto paved the way abroad for the dutch DJ’s. Ten years ago they laughed at the dutch DJ’s. They were world famous here, but never got to go abroad. You have to distinguish yourself and Tiësto is very good at that. Look, the singer of the ‘Skihut’ is very good, but André Hazes sings for a sold out Arena (this only will say something to the dutch people :D). That’s how it works in the dance industry. There are a lot of good DJ’s, but Tiësto is a cool guy, does great productions, the people like him ánd he’s consistant with quality. Then you’re being asked over the whole world.”

“I really think of it as phenomenon; a DJ selling that much tickets. You could never achieve that in the old days. Honestly, I don’t know Tiësto’s music, I only know his name. But when you sell that much tickets (25.000) you really did achieve something. His music is a trend I think. Reggae isn’t all that right now, but it could be back next year... Dance music also has such an undulation. Tiësto’s at the top right now.”

“In Norway I discovered how popular he was over there. The kids almost fainted when hearing his name. His music attracts the young people. It’s very catchy and commercial. I don’t like it. I miss the groove. It’s one-dimensional, flat, with no foundation. It’s not surprising a DJ gets to fill a stadium. After 20 years dance has become one with the society. I think of it as positive development for dance and it’s great an enthusiastic young man like Tiësto with love for this business gets to do it. I really appreciate his devotion.”

LOL. He talks about Tiesto like if he was DJ Sammy or something. It doesn't matter, there are many snubs from other genres that can't tell the difference btw. Tiesto/Armin/Ferry/PVD and Sammy or the Vengaboys, just because they don't know any better and they don't care to know any better. Anything that isn't "groovy" as in having funk is flat and commercial. To me, that lack of funk is part of trance's European and oriental roots, which took a different path in its development from house and techno. Although trance now has more groove and funk than it did back in tis early days. But one-dimensional? :haha: It all might sound cheesy to him and I understand why, but the Magik sound is the Gouda, the best of all Dutch cheese, the best cheese in the world :D . |
