I wonder if you can fill me in on the turntable culture.
Before I got interested in trance and club music, I was convinced that turntables were a 60's-70's thing and had faded into the past and weren't used by most people.
So is it true that the turntable culture today exists just for the DJ? And how do you explain the fact that decades-old technology is still preferred over newer, digital technology in DJ'ing? This is something I don't get. After all the whole techno thing really took off relatively recently. |

| Many of the reasons turntable culture is so huge lies in the medium: vinyl has analogue sound quality that digital simply cannot match. It's hard to verbally quantify, but the sound produced from vinyl is brighter,warmer or fatter. Vinyl also is popular amongst DJ's becuase it is possible to have a good tactiile relationship with it while mixing rather than just pushing buttons(CD's). Also no non-vinyl system has been able to reproduce the effect of scratching or come up with a better one. Also Vinyl is just ing cool. Enough said. |

| DJ RANN is right....vinyl has a certain warmth to it. Also, mixing & working with vinyl has more of a "hands on" aspect to it. You can physically see how much time you have left of a song...you can put the needle right where you want it without having to remember numbers. You can see the record spinning. Those are just a couple of reasons......there are more. And then there people like me who are reluctant to change. I'm very comfortable with vinyl and not about to give it up. |
