How much time to spend on a track?

The quality of a track increases as you spend more time working on it, so you shouldn't rush to get things done.
On the other hand, there comes a point when you have to say STOP. Plus it's unreasonable to dwell on a single track for a very long time.
So: How long, approximately, should one spend on writing and completing a track? |

i usually have a busy life and i work on several songs at once...
so i would say... about 3 songs in the span of 3 or 4 months... about 2 hours a week i would say...
it's seriously hard to say about how much time to put in a track...
if you have had a brilliant flash of inspiration and the track just seems to play itself in your mind and you have everything planned out... it could take a week to finish it....
however... if u are starting from scratch, coming up with things along the way, and trying new things, trying to perfect the sound... it could take maybe up to half a year maybe? |

Two days to two weeks.
I work very intense. When I'm doing a track I tend to forget everything else (even eating) and just concentrate on the track because I'm afraid I'll lose my train of thought.
Working long times (weeks, months) on a track usually means it's never going to sound good. Even when I take 2 weeks to do a tune most of that time it just sits on my HD waiting for my input so again it comes down to a couple of days.
Mastering usually takes an extra day but that's a whole another story :)
I don't think there's a specified time for the "right" amount of time to spend on a track that'd work for everyone. You'll just have to know what works for you. |

It depends: you can finish a track either in one year on in one afternoon. Work on it till you're satisfied with it.
I've been using the last 6 months just to improve my technique and knowledge about producing, however, I reckon it's not needed to do it everytime I write a tune :D |

depends on... the track that people have liked most from me is the track i had worked least on... like 2 hours or something only.
but it might just be becaus i made it in another style.
depends on how big your inspiration is at the moment too... many times i start with a track but then it take's damn long time to finish it becaus i don't know what to do with it.
and sometimes it just flows |

As everyone else has said... there is no right answer.
However long it takes. For example, I think I read somewhere that Paul van Dyk spend some 8 or 9 months working on his remix of The Age of Love. I think I read elsewhere that Airwave finished one of the tracks on his album in 4 hours or so.
If you're not under deadline pressure to finish a track a good rule of thumb is that if it's feeling like hard work have a break or work on something else. |

I usually make a beat with a very basic idea. Then I change around things for a week or two (usually ending up somewhere completely different then what I started out with) until I think I've got hold of a great (complete) flow, which can be built into a full track.
However, I have to build the structure of the full track at once (no stops) or else I have to start over again with arranging. Guess you have to stay in a certain flow, which is different every day. |

in my (Elude) experience...
Nudawn took me + Chris the best part of a year and we still ain't got it perfect. Corfu took about 8 months. Purgatory has taken 2 weeks and we are about 50% with it, and the rest are still unfinished lol, even tho there is enough material to make about 3 albums with if we just worked solid for a week to finish all the trax off which will prolly happen in the summer :)
However remixes are a different kettle of fish. It took me about 4 hours to remix Airwave, about 3 months to remix Heart + Soul and even longer to remix Nudawn lol.
The answer is there is no answer.
BTW, there is no spoon ;) |
