Automation

hey cheggy
I was wondering if it is possible to automate a hardware synth in Cubase SX.

Basically, I want to automate my virus so that as it plays the midi file, it will change parameters like envelope modulation and the amp filters. Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?
TranceInMySoul
This isn't too hard to achieve. The easiest way to get this working is to record onto an empty MIDI track and tweak the Virus parameters as Cubase is recording. When you stop you can then go back and edit the data to make it just right :)

Otherwise examine the Virus manual for the MIDI implementation chart and start programming the MIDI messages you need to get the changes you're after.

Cheers man. I tried that before (the first option) and Cubase didn't seem to be recieving any midi data. The "in" light didn't register. I'll give it another go though.

The manual seems very brief on this topic. Maybe there's something in the Cubase manual.

edit:

Tranceinmysoul, Would you be able to help me out? When you create an automation channel in Cubase SX, do you know which type of automation channel i need to use, eg insert enable, send enable, random, range, etc. I still can't figure this out. Cubase is recieving the midi data now but not recording it to track

First off, I don't have any external hardware, so I can't confirm if this will really work, but it works for VSTs.

I definitely agree with TranceInMySoul in saying that you should just start recording on the midi channel (that means hit the W (Write) button on the midi channel, press play and then start moving the knob). The reason I say that is because Cubase won't always label the automation tracks properly in the list of automation channels, so you'll probably never figure out which automation track corresponds to which knob. You don't have to activate the particular automation channel when u want to write to it. If you succesfully record/write automation data, the channel that you wrote to will be moved to the top of the list of all the possible automation channels with a * beside it. Any automation channel that contains automation changes will get a * and be placed at the top of the list. If the knob ur trying to automate doesn't seem to record, then it may be because the knob can't be automated or there's something more you have to do that I'm not aware of.

BTW, do you see the midi-in light come on when you move other knobs on your synth? If so, then I think the knob you're trying to control can't be automated. If no knob movements light up the midi-in light, then you may not have connected the synth properly to your midi connection.

Hope that makes sense

Okay mate, I'll have another go. The virus manual says its possible, but that's all it says.

Thanks

If that knob is supposed to send out midi data and all the other knobs send out the data properly, then you may have to contact the synth manufacturer. Not sure what else to try, sorry.
