friend of mine wants to hang out around the usa with his soon to be wife...they get married very shortly and he has not completely planned the honeymoon (typical man imo), so he wanted me to ask some ppl on the boards....what would be a nice place to take the wife...remember he does not club that much....so more picturesque spots would be great....and would it cost a fortune for these ideas...remember the man spent a fortune on the wedding.

if he comes in teh summer he should check out summer stage in central park. you can also take a carrige ride there which is supposedly romantic or something.

i am into museums so i would recommend museum mile on 5th ave from 72nd to about 90th. the met, guggenheim, and a bunch of other galleries are there. also, if he is here in the summer, i higly recommend going to MoMA PS1 in Queens on a saturday afternoon. really chill vibe.

also, be sure to check out union square. some cool shops around there and places to eat.

also, chopping in soho is great. but also, shopping around 36th and 6th is wonderfully cheap.

and if you want to see some interesting ppl (and great bars), check out the east village. (plus you can visit me and buy me dinner ;))

also, you can get topns of cheap stuff on canal st and while you are there check out Joe's in chinatown for their soup dumplings... sooooooooo good.

i thought caroline was banned? :conf:

edt: nm. that was weird. she had a post her for a second and then it was gone.

How about Brooklyn?People never mention that NYC has 4 more beautiful BOROUGHS!Take a tour around Williamsburg-5 minutes from Manhattan! Some great dinging that can be done there. Very inexpensive too. Some Thai for your taste buds? Check out Train on 6th, by Berry St. or on a nice day Yabby on 1st & 2nd. Dj's come on at night. And since you are there you must check out the best steakhouse in NY. Peter Luger for some juicy steak anyone? It's so goood!:p and right over Williamsburg bridge! Lot of cool spots so check it out.

Going to Manhattan is always fun! Chelsea is cool but might be a little too wild!*wink* You might want to head more towards the meat packing district and check out some cool night spots like APT and TRUST. A cool bruncheon I used to hit was ELMO. Don't know if it's still there but its good food!
Upper West is always great for dining and Museums (and of course Central Pk).
Lower east is great source for some quick delicous grub and some night out for drinks. Always inexpensive.
Midtown(by 5th ave) is just pure Tourist madness BUT excellent shopping if your wife-to-be loves her couture$!!
P.S. don't eat in Midtown... prices triple due to tourist volume. Eventhough I work here, I personally prefer Downtown Manhattan. This area just seems to dull. Unless you head towards Lex.
I love to recommend that Soho be the place. A bit touristy but totally trendy all around. On a bright sunny day, you will see why this is the place to be! ;) Urban as you can get! Number of galleries and restaurants...cool boutiques and you have Broadway near by which has millions of shops!
No matter where you go in NYC, there is always somewhere to go, something to look at. If you do a citysearch I am sure you will find more info. Good luck! and have fun!:D

you can walk around 5th avenue strip....rockefeller center, great stores to shop and toward the end by 63rd street, that where the plaza hotel is and the beginning of central park...visti FAO SWARTZ toy store where they filmed BIG...hmmm what else...people already mentioned the village, soho, canal street, broadway, blah blah blah....umm walk on the west side highway....cool spot to chill, you can see the USS INTREPID and a view of JERSEY :toothless , go downtown where you can visit ground zero, if you want to.:( cant think more for now....

they should probably check out an issue of the village voice when they get here to see what is going on.

actually i think you can look at it online as well.

As Butterfly suggested peep the Voice, or even better, pick up Time Out New York and plan accordingly.

Check out Summerstage in Central Park; the Bandshell in Prospect Park;
Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge; eat at Katzs' or 2nd Avenue Deli or have a stomach-churning papaya's hot dog; shop in Midtown or the Lower East Side or the Village; laugh at the trust-fund poseurs on St. Mark's place; hit the museums up; buy used books at the Strand or at Labyrinth; go to a baseball game; have a pizza at lombardi's; burger at the Corner Bistro; or a drink at McSorley's; if you're not into clubbing, do the lounge thing; do a walking tour rather than a bus tour--new york was meant to be walked through not driven -- www.bigonion.com offers the best walking tours IMO.

Check out one of my favorite spots in the city (and most overlooked) at the Cloisters. The Cloisters is the medieval wing of the Met and it's located in Inwood (A train to Dykman St). It's built like an old castle and offers spectacular views of the Hudson.

Dyckman St is in Inwood--the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan, right above Washington Heights/Ft. George. The A train stops right at Dyckman and Broadway and it's a short walk to the Cloisters.

The Cloisters are a great spot because most people either don't know about them or are too lazy/afraid to take the train all the way uptown. If you're driving up the Henry Hudson Parkway, you can see the neo-gothic facades peeking out from the greenery toward the Hudson and Jersey.

One of the many hidden gems of the city :)
