How much does it cost to run a forum?

Hey guys, you see it all the time, when a community grows too rapidly (like Tranceairwaves) and the owners have trouble paying the huge cost of the bandwith each month.
I just want to know how much bandwith is usually required to run a regular sized forum (not like Tranceaddict because I think most people here would never be able to afford it). I see a lot of forums go under because the cost gets too high to operate.
Anyone here have an idea of how much bandwith a normal regular sized forum generate and a gerneral idea of how much the costs would be?
I'm asking this because I'm thinking of starting a psytrance and goa music forum, obviously it's not going to be as big of a site as tranceaddict nor do I want it to be, but just a general idea of how much bandwith I should consider when choosing a host.
I just have this feeling that forums generate a lot of traffic and bandwith wth all the page views, I just have no idea how much. Anyone here who runs a forum and knows more about this please respond, thanx! ;)
oh yeah, let's say you're running a web server at home (ie, apache) would it be a good idea to run a forum also? As you can see I'm clusless here and would like some more insight. |

I talked with the administrator of themanadrain.com (forums located here) and he said it cost him $30 US per month and $100 per year for the domain.
This was a while back, I think he may have upped his bandwidth or done some other upgrading...so it might have risen.
themanadrain.com forums are what I'd call an average forum...not huge like TA but not puny either. |

thanks for the heads up Magimaster. If it's only 30 bucks US a month to run a forum like manaddrain (with 976 users) then I guess it's not too bad, I was just expecting it to be so much more.
One thing I don't get tho, is how come it costs him/her $100 per year for the domain? :conf: You can get a domain for Much cheaper than that, no? or am I missing something here. |
