Hey.
Havent been on here in along while, but i thought i might use here as a good place to gauge peoples opinions of a hosting cmpnay i might setup.
How many people here would pay for somewhere to host their mp3's and put up a site to promote their music?
What kind of price would you pay for hosting (yeah i know free's best, but still)
e.g. 2Gb transfer a month plus 200mb space for £70?? higher lower??
And how would you pay for it? - visa, paypal?????
Thanks!! :) |

I wouldnt basically, unless i was making my own site, and was on the verge of mabye getting signed etc...
Im quite happy with unlimited, free services like IUMA.com, mp3.com.au, mikseri, soundclick, and so on... |

How much is that in Canadian funds???
I doubt that you can compete with unlimited MP3 space from IUMA, soundclick, NMC, etc. Unless you charge maybe $10/month (canadian) or less and offer what they have, plus more, such as record label submission tips/templates, e-mail account, purely custom web-pages, almost full control of music, streaming, etc etc.... I'm blabbling.
but yea that's my opinion... I'd pay no more than $10 CDN a month, by money order (probably a year prepaid) (cause I have no Credit Card) |

Thanks for your replies
Sftfoo - thats about £35 for a year.
I definately understand about Mp3.com and all the other sites. its something ill have to this about, and come up with a package that is going to be a good deal for all concerned. It might however not be possible, esp with the weight of mp3.com.
Im looking at creating fully customisable pages, with PHP reading the ftp folder, so you can upload a track, write some blog and its online instantly.
I can see that its these kinds of features that are going to give added value to the service.
Cheers. Have a good weekend! |

I wouldn't pay, there are enough services out there to provide exposure plus I'm hosting a site for myself anyways. However this is just me, i'm sure there are other people out there without the time or expertise to do it themselves. ₤35 is really expensive though.
On a site note, you can use php or cgi-lib.pl to incorporate file uploads without users having to ftp to your site. |

| oh wait, ₤35 for a year is fine. For some reason I thought that was per month lol |

I'm using digitalspace.net to host my sites, they charge between $36 / year and about 200 or so, i've only got 10mb storage space which is more than enough for me, unlimited pop3, php, sql, lots of stuff that usually costs a fortune.
the servers are a little slow, but they're not bad.
It's cheap, and t does the job for me ok!
my advise: either have a cheap service of resonable quality, or have a solid reliable service at a competitive price.

I know ill have to think alot about this, and make sure ive got the right services for the job.
rahvin_ yep, ill use php to users can log-in and upload of a normnal web form, so they dont need any technical knowledge.
Php to draw info and create links to files automtically too, stuff like that.
UglyDave- id definately off a solid level of quality, doing it badly would send the support and time spent sorting problems out through the roof. |
