Cuz it's not that big of a deal ... it's a headline grabber.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...-2003May26.html

It was a non-virulent form of anthrax (similiar to the kind generated naturally in the wild) and what would you expect to be in a chemical weapons plant/dump from the 60's?

But then the article makes this point:

quote:
The anthrax was a non-virulent strain, and the discoveries are apparently remnants of an abandoned germ warfare programme. They merited only a local news item in the Washington Post.

But suspicious finds in Iraq have made front-page news (before later being cleared), given the failure of US military inspection teams to find evidence of the weapons that were the justification for the March invasion.

Even more embarrassing for the Pentagon, there was no documentation about the various biological agents disposed of at the US bio-defence centre at Fort Detrick. Iraq's failure to come up with paperwork proving the destruction of its biological arsenal was portrayed by the US as evidence of deception in the run-up to the war.

It identifies serious hypocracy in the US (and probably world-wide) media as well as in the US government/military. Why should the Iraqi government be forced - at the end of a gun barrell - to abide by one set of laws while the US are free to bury 2,000 tonnes of dangerous material in someones backyard?

The bad news was that the stash was found, not in Iraq, but fewer than 50 miles from Washington, near Fort Detrick in the Maryland countryside.

lol :D

hahaha this is just way too funny! for how long some of you war-mongers are gonna be in such denials huh??? you're not gonna find any ing WMD's in Iraq and this war was completely un-justified (mainly due to the reasons that were given to go there)
I can see atleast people like occrider..who was FOR the war...but now he has doubts about it...i admire this guy for that. but some of you will always never WANT to believe that you were wrong! and that is just sick and the sad truth that exists within us!

This argument again ;). Because they agreed to it at the end of the first gulf war ... unlike virtually every other country out there. This is why Russia, France, N. Korea, China , etc., etc., etc., can have chemical weapons.

Do we really have to bring all this up again?

But you know due to lack of evidence...it doesnt give you a right to go barging (sp?) in to somebody's country like that. Especially when the US was accussed of sending spies as weapons inspectors? so there are lot of underlying factors...for Iraq not to comply...especially when they're being bullied by the super power and they cant do jack about it.
we need to get rid off that 'everything is black & white' mentality we have. its not gonna get us anywhere in this world.
We know that Iraq was at fault and so was US!! and not admitting to our wrong doings is not gonna help us solve the problems we have now in this world.

I'm not arguing the correctness of the war, I'm responding to renegade as to why Iraq cannot have chemical weapons whereas the US or any other country can.
