i also really like that book as well. to be honest, it took me awhile to get into but after the initial tedious bits, it reads amazingly :) very deep and intruging book.

good travel book... hmmm.... just finished reading 'Memoirs of A Geisha' by Arthur Golden. though its not exactl set in modern time and so u cant really use it as a reffernce for your travel, its def interesting reading about a culture that u may not be so familiar w/. very detailed style of writing so u can get quite absorbed into the mindscape the author creates :)

other recommendations:

*'A Prayer For Owen Meany' by John Irving
*'Blindness by Jose Saragamo
*'To Kill A Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee
*'The Green Mile' by Stephen King - honestly, his writing style nor his language really impress me but the story itself is very good.

i bought several books, cuz they were super cheap, in the past week so im looking foward to spending time w/ my nose in the book all snuggled up in my bed ;)
few of the books that i bought...:
*'The Chamber' by John Grisham
*'Acid Row' by Minette Walters
*'A Day Late And A Dollar Short' by Terry Mcmillan

lol i was calling the author of sophies world a dick martian

and I know all about RJ I have his compendium also. hes my favorite author. Its weak in a sense of not as intense as Lord of Chaos, or have quite the feeling of shadow rising.

But you cant have those again, because their lives are different. You admitted its "not weak if you know what hes doing" but that just means he has an excellent excuse for it being weak.

Its still amazing writing, but he has to get some story lines in place which creates a sense of dull technicality behind it

all i was sayin

cheers

not really a traveling book, but the amazing Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk was the book that lead me into reading The Beach... also, Chuck's Survivor is very good.

fight club is awesome.....definitely a short read though.

dont read A Prayer For Owen Meany, it sucks ass, seriously.

also, a good author that i found is greg iles. he writes more along the lines of an "action" novel, but they['re good. i've read "the quiet game", "Spandau phoenix" and "Black cross"....the last two are about Nazis, but all three are very good if you're looking for a "action" book.

Guys, if you actually follow up on Robert Jordan, the 10th installment did exactly what it was supposed to do. Jordan layed out his plan for each book about 15 years ago, so this was all expected. It's annoying to see so many people criticize his work of late without getting to know him or the story behind the story more.

He layed out a plan that nothing would happen in book 10? I'm sorry but a book with no plot is just not good in my books. My largest pet peeve with Jordan is his tendency to introduce a zillion characters with little or no importance (ie, several of his books have 100 page introductions which introduce 20 or more characters). Honestly, I truly believe that if I skipped book 10 and went straight to book 11 when it comes out, I would not have missed a damn thing.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

Probably the single greatest book I have ever read. Everytime I need a good kick in the ass I give it a read. Can be read in less than a day, but the lessons you learn from it last a lifetime.

Best books I've read:
Gabriel Garcia Marquez "One hundered years of Solitude" <-- Buenandia Family will always be dear to me.
Vladimir Nabakov "LOLITA" <-- Super!
K. Vonnegut "Cat's Cradle" (I've read almost everything by him.)
Alexander Dumas "Count of Monte Christo"
Ops!
Oscar Wilde "Picture Of Dorian Gray" (almost forgot..great book!)

To get into the groove:
- Aldous Huxley (um..spelling) "Brave New World"
(and also "Brave New World Revisited" gives you further insight. Read it before an actuall book. You'll understand WHY a lot of things occur.)
- F.Scott Fitcherald "The Great Gatsby" <-- romantic
- A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess <--you need to analyze it in depth before fully understanding it.

A link to the list of 100 best books ever written.

p.s. it still escapes me how Salinger got on that list.

The Bourne Identity , by Robert Ludlum
*The movie was based on the book and the movie was good. However the BOOK kicks the crap out of the movie. There's more sotry, more detail, more action, everything is better. Then if you really love the book , there's 2 sequels (The Bourne SUpremacy, and the Bourne Utimatum)
