I used my xmas money to get my first set up ( a ty american dj mixer and two cheap numark decks) Then after using those for about a year and deciding that djing is really something i want to pursue i used to money i had saved up (from djing birthday parties, work, holidays etc..) for a car to buy 2 1200s a pmc05pro mixer and a bunch of vinyl :p
oh yeah and my parents were pretty pissed |

I think someone also mentioned before, if they are that young (in their teens), then they got mamma and pappa helping them out, one way or another. In otherwords, mom and dad may not necessarily give them money if they are like 18 yrs old, but they still may live at home, so they dont pay rent.
Im 23 yrs old...The only way ive done it, because I live by myself (with girlfriend), is work a full time job and be broke at the same time, especially cause i have a girlfriend. Not only that, but i have other bills besides rent, like school loans, car payment, etc. So i have to always work a full time job.
However, Even with a full time job, I was not able to do much when I was in college, cause i had extra costs such as classes, books, etc.
Obviously, any profit ive gotten from parties and live shows has been reinvested in vinyl or spent on bills, wichever comes first.
Either way, its all about managing your money. If you spend money on crap, you wont have any for dj equipment or expenses. Also, shopping for gear wisely and shopping for vinyl at the right places and at the right time.
One solution to getting gear you want, even if your broke, would be to finance through your local pro audio store or online shop. Obviously, your purpose is not to pay any extra than you have to, so look for those times that they offer special 0% interest for an extended amount of time. Sometimes, depending on the shop, they will have a good deal like 0 pay, 0 interested for like 2yrs or something like that. But of course, it all comes down to being responsible and having good credit. |

| When I got my turntables I moved my dresser into my sister's room, BTW I also bought my equipment with financial aid money and I still live with my rents so that helps, but you guys are an inspiration that have it so rough and still manage to prioritize your money, I hope to be as disciplined as you guys one day, right now I still buy lots of fast food. |

ok,im one of those kids..
First I went saving for like 3 years (didnt knew for what back then).After a while I was lucky that some dude that worked at a telephone center had some Handheld computers left..but..it didnt worked @ my computer.So I sold it,and I had enough money for a nice set.
Then,I was lucky again cuz a friend of mine had quit with his drive-in show and I could take over the audio-set for their small events :)
(A double cd deck,cheap mixer,headphones,amplifier,flightcase)
and so I started DJing.Becouse I spinned with CDs I didnt had the vinyl costs and with that I saved a full year for one TT,and took the old technics pickup from my parents (With pitch-wheel :toothless ) and that is my set now.
Oh..wait..After like 2 months I bought a new mixer,which (one year later) still works perfectly :)
So I just been lucky,cuz my parents would NEVER give me DJ gear :) |

you need to make the plunge one day and buy the damn things

The way I get my money, is primarely through my Job (subway) I am only 15, 16 in July, so i dont worry about bills and crap. I just spend all my money on equipment and recordss. I also get gigs, and pull in an average of 100 dollars per gig. Then of course, its nice when my birthday rolls around, also christmas.
I love buying stuff of ebay. I have bought lots of equipemt, and has saved me money, and is still great quality |

If I didn't play footy I would definitely work after school. Right now it's kinda impossible to go out and buy vinyl on a regular basis...
It's a pisser, but nobody said it would be easy to become a dj... |

I started off when I was 17
and I bought all my stuff myself.
To this day I've gone through:
1 pair stanton St8-60s (i think they were...)
1 Vestax pmc 02a (or something to that effect)
1 Numark dm2002x (which I'll give someone if they're desperate enough for a mixer)
1 Vestax pcv 275
amd now I have 3 tech 1200s and a djm 500.. had them for quite some time now though been paid off for over two years.
and I have lived on my own and keeping money aside for vinyl is difficult!!! |

I thought I would add my 2 cents in here...
I think it all boils down to motivation. If you really want something, you are going to do your best to get it. If you are just starting out, don't try to buy it all at once, or save up until you can. Just piece it together and work with what you have.
I started buying my stuff around age 18, and am still buying stuff at 21. I have all the essentials, and play out regularly, but there is always more to buy.
Before I get off the soapbox... If you are really serious about DJing and music, then buy the best equipment out there. Get 1200's (at least) and a good mixer and run it off a home stereo system. At least if it all goes to hell, you can sell it back on ebay for a good price. Few people will buy a used belt drive TT...

well some people say the parents pay, some people say they are dj's, i say that if ur not a dj just work find a job or somethin, thas wat i do. but theres so many ways, i think u just have to find the right path which ever one u feel comfortable with. |
