this site has loads about producing
http://www.tweakheadz.com/

You gonna need
-sequencer ex: cubase/sonar/logic/fruityloops

-vsti plugins
http://www.tweakheadz.com/digital_audio_tricks.html
http://www.kvr-vst.com

If you have some xtra $$$ to burn
check out a midi controller(keyboard to control you vsti) or a synth....Also monitors...

Hope this helps

External gear depends on how much you can spend, but you probably need a mixer, sampler, synth and some effects.

However, I would strongly recommend at least thinking about using a computer based sequencer.

no offense, but if you don't know what to buy already...you are gonna buy a bunch of great equipment that you can't do anything with. i mean seriously, don't buy a bunch of stuff that you can't use.

and if i tell you to go buy this synth...that fx processor...and this rack of stuff...are you gonna be able to use it?? most likely not. i would start with software first...just like everyone else here, but do what you want...

This is why I recommended Tweakheadz.com. He will have a question like "Well, what if I want to go with a computer-less studio?" and he writes an article about that.

For instance, I was confused about mixers and which one I should buy to route sound to the computer. He had an article about this exact question and I found that I needed an ALT buss for this. You get the idea : )
