External gear depends on how much you can spend, but you probably need a mixer, sampler, synth and some effects. However, I would strongly recommend at least thinking about using a computer based sequencer. Etherium This is why I recommended Tweakheadz.com. He will have a question like "Well, what if I want to go with a computer-less studio?" and he writes an article about that. For instance, I was confused about mixers and which one I should buy to route sound to the computer. He had an article about this exact question and I found that I needed an ALT buss for this.
